Ollidar was an archmaester of the Citadel who became the first Grand Maester.[1]

Appearance and Character

Ollidar was exceptionally learned. While he was an archmaester, his ring, rod, and mask were bronze.[1][N 1]

History

Although King Aegon I Targaryen already had maesters of his own, in 5 AC he asked the Citadel for an archmaester to advise him on governing the Seven Kingdoms. The Conclave selected the experienced Archmaester Ollidar, the keeper of histories. The new Grand Maester was exceptionally old, however, and he died less than a year after his appointment. Ollidar was succeeded as Grand Maester by Archmaester Lyonce.[1]

Notes

  1. Copper is the established metal for the regalia of historian archmaesters, per the appendix of A Feast for Crows; bronze may be an error, or the Citadel traditions may have changed over time. The only other archmaester known to have bronze jewels is Vaellyn, who is an astronomer, not a historian.
