Prentys Tully was the Lord of Riverrun and the head of House Tully during the later reign of King Maegor I Targaryen and the early reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. He was married to the pious Lady Lucinda, of House Broome.[2]

Character

Prentys Tully's term in the small council as master of laws had been undistinguished.[3]

History

Maegor the Cruel

Lord Prentys became one of the first great lords to abandon King Maegor I in 48 AC, rallying to the banners of the young Prince Jaehaerys.[4] As Maegor's support began evaporating, word soon arrived at King's Landing that Prentys had opened the gates of Riverrun to Ser Joffrey Doggett, the fugitive Grand Captain of the outlawed Warrior's Sons.[5] With the support of Lord Tully's wife, Lady Lucinda, Ser Joffrey moved freely between the riverlands and westerlands.[6]

Master of laws

After the death of Maegor the Cruel, Lord Prentys and Lady Lucinda attended the coronation of King Jaehaerys I in Oldtown, accompanied by Ser Joffrey.[6] Prentys was summoned to court to serve as lord justiciar and master of laws during the minority of the young king.[2] Prentys was undistinguished in this office.[3] Hoping to please the Faith, Prentys suggested that the king wed the pious Ella Broome, the younger sister of his wife, but Jaehaerys instead married his own sister, Princess Alysanne Targaryen, in secret at Dragonstone.[2]

Outraged by the marriage, Lord Rogar Baratheon sought to confront the king at Dragonstone, though Lord Prentys warned him that the king may simply close the gates of the citadel against them. Instead, Queen Dowager Alyssa Velaryon dispatched Prentys's wife to Dragonstone to take charge of Alysanne's household. When Lord Baratheon spoke of putting the king aside in his absence, Prentys accused him of claiming the Iron Throne for himself, which Rogar denied vehemently for he desired to place the tractable and young Princess Aerea on the throne. However, the small council refused to support him and Queen Alyssa demanded his resignation as Hand of the King.[7] King Jaehaerys I returned to King's Landing shortly after, much to Lord Tully's relief.[8]

When the king reached his majority and began to rule in his own right in 50 AC, Jaehaerys thanked Prentys for his service and replaced him with Lord Albin Massey of Stonedance.[8]

Later life

On account of his undistinguished term sitting on the small council, Prentys was passed over during the consideration of a new Hand of the King, after the resignation of Lord Daemon Velaryon in 54 AC. However, Lord Tully had a favorable opinion of his bannerman, Lord Myles Smallwood of Acorn Hall, as the new Hand of the King.[3]

King Jaehaerys visited Lord Tully at Riverrun during a royal progress across the riverlands.[3] In late 58 AC, Prentys attended the tourney at King's Landing commemorating the tenth anniversary of the king's coronation.[9] Prentys and Lucinda died at Riverrun from the Shivers a day apart from each other in the winter of 59 AC.[1]
