Pureborn by Felicia Chris Dien © Fantasy Flight Games

The Pureborn, also known as the Enthroned, are the noble rulers of Qarth.[1] They contend with merchant princes from the Thirteen, the Ancient Guild of Spicers, and the Tourmaline Brotherhood for control of the city.[1]

Organization

The Pureborn rule the city of Qarth from the Hall of a Thousand Thrones. They command the Civic Guard, which includes camelry, and a fleet of ornate galleys which control the Jade Gates.[2][1]

To receive an audience with the Pureborn, a petitioner should make a traditional sacrifice in the Temple of Memory, offer a traditional bribe to the Keeper of the Long List, and send a traditional persimmon to the Opener of the Door. If all goes well, the petitioner will be sent a pair of blue slippers, signifying the granting of an audience in the Hall of a Thousand Thrones.[1]

The Pureborn are courteous and respond to flattery.[1] Known Pureborn include Wendello Qar Deeth, Egon Emeros, and Mathos Mallarawan. The calculating Pureborn are notorious for offering poisoned wine to those they consider dangerous, and their avarice is equally well-known.[1]

History

The Pureborn are descendants of Qarth's ancient kings and queens.[1] When the Dothraki destroyed other Qaathi cities in the Century of Blood, the Qartheen were forced to look to the sea. The Pureborn built a fleet to control the Jade Gates, allowing their city to prosper from trade between the Summer Sea to the west and the Jade Sea to the east.[3]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

While residing in Xaro Xhoan Daxos's palace in Qarth, Daenerys Targaryen seeks an audience with the Pureborn to plead for their ships and soldiers. Despite her bribes, the Pureborn refuse her, as Ser Jorah Mormont predicted.[1] Their rejection is adorned with great courtesy.[1]

A Dance with Dragons

In Meereen, Xaro tells Daenerys that, following the destruction of the House of the Undying, he went to the Hall of a Thousand Thrones to beg the Pureborn for her life. When Xaro told them that Daenerys was no more than a child, Egon Emeros replied she was a foolish child, mad and heedless and too dangerous to live.[4]

Quotes

They are Milk Men indeed. They never meant to help me. They came because they were curious. They came because they were bored, and the dragon on my shoulder interested them more than I did.[1]

—thoughts of Daenerys Targaryen

It is wisely said that it is easier to milk the Stone Cow of Faros than to wring gold from the Pureborn.[1]

The Pureborn? They have water in their veins.[4]
