The stone holdfast tower stands upon an rocky island in a lake, the shore of the lake grows thick with oak trees.[2]

A stone causeway lies beneath the water of the lake, leading to the island that the tower holdfast stands on, it starts as a stone pathway three feet wide, leading right out into the lake and were the path of the causeway comes climbing out of the water onto they island it turns into a short flight of stone steps that lead to the holdfasts door. Path, steps, and door are in a straight line, which makes you think the causeway runs straight, but that is not so. The path under the water is not straight instead it ziggs and zaggs going a third of the way around the island before jagging back. The turns are treacherous, and the long path means that anyone approaching would be exposed to arrow fire from the tower for a long time.[2]

When entering the tower true the stout oak door with a low lintel, there is a small gloomy strongroom with a murder hole above it. From there steps built into the inner wall of the tower curve away upward to the left to the upper stories, and downward to the right into a under vault, both directions are locked behind iron grates. The second floor of the tower is a maze of small cells. The third floor of the tower has arrow slits, while the fourth has windows. The fifth floor is a large round chamber with arched doors on three sides opening onto small stone balconies, and along the fourth side is a privy chamber perched above a sewer chute that drops straight down into the lake, the north-facing balcony looks out toward the village. There is access to the roof, and the tower's merlons where painted gold, but they have since faded to yellow.[2][3] The tower is described as a roundtower and a towerhouse, according to Jon Snow there would have been a signalfire on the roof in case of a wildling attack.[3]

The remnants of an inn and village can still be seen next to the lake shore opposite they entrance of the tower, the village is surrounded by apple and oak trees. All that remains of the Inn is a stone chimney and two cracked walls, set amongst a dozen apple trees, one of them is growing up through the common room.[2] The inn used to be small and was made from timber. Most of the houses of the village have collapsed.[3]

History

During a visit to the north,[N 1] Queen Alysanne Targaryen flew to the Wall on her dragon, Silverwing. She stayed at this holdfast on her way, so the villagers painted the merlons atop the tower gold.[3]

While they wait out a storm, a northman passing through arrives and stays in the ruined village to also wait out the storm. The wildling party which includes Jon Snow arrives and captures the man, however. Although Jon balks at killing the stranger, Ygritte kills the man anyway.[2][3]

Notes

  1. This event occurred in or between 58 AC and 93 AC. Indeed Alysanne came for the first time in the North in 58 AC (Fire & Blood, Jaehaerys and Alysanne - Their Triumphs and Tragedies) and she rode Silverwing for the last time in 93 AC (Fire & Blood, The Long Reign - Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Policy, Progeny, and Pain).
