Rhaenys was a year or two younger than Aegon. She had the silver-gold Targaryen hair which she kept long and wore loose. Physically she was more slender and graceful than her sister. She was known as less stern and more playful and curious than her older sister, Visenya.[1] She was also interested in music and poetry.[2] She loved to ride her dragon Meraxes and spent twice as much time riding than her siblings. She surrounded herself with comely young men and there were whispers that she entertained men while Aegon was with Visenya - yet Aegon spent ten nights with Rhaenys for every one with Visenya. [3]
History
The Conquest
Rhaenys participated in the War of Conquest by riding her dragon, Meraxes, in battle. Rosby peacefully yielded to her.
Rhaenys and Meraxes accompanied the army of Orys Baratheon when they marched on the Stormlands and defeated Argilac the Arrogant in the Battle of the Last Storm.
She along with Visenya and Aegon secured the victory on the Field of Fire when all three dragons were unleashed together for the first and only time in the war.
After the Field of Fire, Aegon went north to deal with the Starks. Rhaenys led the invasion of Dorne.
Rhaenys led her army into Dorne. However, the Dornish refused to give battle, instead melting away into the mountains and deserts, returning only to launch guerrilla raids on the army. Rhaenys captured holdfasts to no avail, as their people (learning of what happened to Harrenhal) had already fled, leaving only the elderly and infirm. Frustrated, Rhaenys flew directly to Sunspear to demand Princess Mariya's surrender. Mariya instead informed her that, "This is Dorne. You are not wanted here, return at your peril." Rhaenys replied that she would return with "Fire and blood", but Mariya simply replied, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken". The Targaryen army withdrew from Dorne, leaving the country untaken.
Later Life
Rhaenys was the mother of Aenys I Targaryen. It was her line that comprised the bulk of the Targaryen dynasty. Daenerys Stormborn is the last of her descendants who still bears the Targaryen name, although her progeny can still be found amongst Baratheons and Martells. Her son. Aenys, became the second King to sit on the Iron Throne. Aenys, who was married to Alyssa Velaryon for political reasons, was born in 7 AC[4][5] It is currently unknown if Rhaenys had any other children.
In 4 AC, Aegon I decided to start another campaign on Dorne. Rhaenys participated in this war, which eventually lead to her death. Meraxes, her dragon, was killed as well, hit by a scorpion.[6][7]
