Lord Rossart was a member of the Alchemists' Guild in King's Landing. He served as the Hand of the King to Aerys II Targaryen for a fortnight.[1]

History

Rossart was the Grand Master of the Alchemists' Guild during the reign of Aerys II, who granted him the title of Lord and a seat on the small council. He was also the pyromancer who had cooked Lord Rickard Stark in his armor,[2] and one of the key players in the wildfire plot. After Lord Qarlton Chelsted was burned alive, Aerys made Rossart Hand of the King. As his personal arms he chose a burning torch.[3][4] As the Sack of King's Landing began, Rossart dressed as a common man-at-arms and rushed to fulfill Aerys's orders to burn the city, but he was killed by Ser Jaime Lannister before he could carry out his orders, Rossart had tried futilely to put up a fight, but fought like an alchemist.[3]

In the recorded history, the Maesters, ignorant of the wildfire plot write that Rossart was killed while attempting to flee the castle in disguise. They do not even speculate who killed him and apparently no one even inquired. [5]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Hallyne the pyromancer meets with Tyrion Lannister to update him on the amount of wildfire that has been created. Tyrion is the first Hand of the King since Rossart to visit the Alchemists' Guild.[6] Hallyne informs Tyrion that they found a cache of over three hundred jars of wildfire that had been placed beneath the Dragonpit by Lord Rossart.[7]

A Storm of Swords

Ser Jaime Lannister reveals to Brienne of Tarth the wildfire plot and the part Rossart played in it.[3]

A Feast for Crows

Cersei Lannister considers appointing Hallyne as the new Hand of the King, stating he would not be the first pyromancer to become Hand. Jaime does not approve of the choice, remembering how he killed the last one.[8]

A Dance with Dragons

Kevan Lannister remembers that after the Battle of the Bells he had expected King Aerys II Targaryen to have no choice but to summon Tywin Lannister once again, but instead Aerys had turned to Lords Chelsted and Rossart and paid for it with his life and crown.[9]

Quotes about Rossart

Aerys: All the traitors. Rossart says they are inside the walls! He's gone to make them a warm welcome. Whose blood? Whose?.
Jaime: Rossart's.[3]

Aerys II Targaryen to Jaime Lannister, demanding to know whose blood is on Jaime's sword during the Sack of King's Landing.

Queer that they never asked who killed Rossart...but of course, he was no one, lowborn, Hand for a fortnight, just another mad fancy of the Mad King. [3]

Aerys's Hand, Rossart, was killed at a postern gate after cravenly tempting to flee the castle.[5]
