Samwell Tarly, known as Savage Sam, was the Lord of Horn Hill and head of House Tarly during the reign of King Aenys I Targaryen.[2][3]

History

When the Vulture King began raiding the Dornish Marches in 37 AC, Lord Orys Baratheon was joined by marcher lords in the Second Dornish War. The Vulture King soon abandoned his siege of Nightsong, but Lord Harmon Dondarrion and Lady Ellyn Caron cut off his retreat, while Samwell suddenly appeared in the Dornish line of march with several thousand knights and archers.[3]

In what became known as the Vulture Hunt, it is claimed that Savage Sam's Valyrian steel sword, Heartsbane, was crimson from hilt to point with the blood of the dozens of Dornish outlaws he had slain.[2] The Dornish host was defeated and the Vulture King was taken alive and tied naked between two posts by Sam. The Vulture King soon perished of thirst and exposure.[3] Samwell was among those granted gold, honors, and offices by a grateful King Aenys I Targaryen.[3]

The Lord of Horn Hill was present at the Golden Wedding in 49 AC, but it is unknown if this was Samwell.[4]
