A Clash of Kings

Shagwell with two severed heads, by Rafal Hrynkiewicz © Fantasy Flight Games

Shagwell is among the Brave Companions who arrive at Harrenhal under the employ of Lord Tywin Lannister.[4]

After the fall of Harrenhal, Shagwell hacks off the heads of two dead knights from Ser Amory Lorch's garrison and prances through the castle, swinging the heads by the hair and mockingly making them talk of the cause of their deaths. Shagwell spreads the story of the 'weasel soup' and Arya Stark's involvement in the castle's fall, which prompts Arya to consider adding him to her prayer kill list, but her fear of Shagwell negates this thought.[1] When Lord Roose Bolton arrives at Harrenhal, Shagwell introduces Arya to him as the 'weasel who made the soup'. Shagwell kicks the captive Amory into the bear pit that evening.[1]

A Storm of Swords

Urswyck captures Ser Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth near Maidenpool and brings them to Vargo Hoat, the leader of the Brave Companions. Shagwell kicks out Jaime's legs and jumps on the knight's back, allowing Zollo to then chop off Jaime's sword hand.[7]

On the way to Harrenhal, Jaime grabs Timeon's sword one morning and tries to escape. Shagwell dodges all of the knight's swings, however, and kisses Jaime's head after he trips.[5] Shagwell, Zollo, and Rorge attempt to rape Brienne one night, but Jaime thwarts them by claiming she can be ransomed for sapphires from her father, Lord Selwyn Tarth.[5] Shagwell suggests that Jaime be thrown into Harrenhal's bear pit, but Vargo and Roose refuse.[8] Shagwell is among the Companions mocked by Jaime after the knight is released from Harrenhal by Roose.[9]

A Feast for Crows

The Brave Companions scatter with the capture of Harrenhal by Ser Gregor Clegane. Jaime hopes to find Pyg and Shagwell in Harrenhal's dungeon when he returns to the castle, but they have already departed.[10] Pyg, Timeon, and Shagwell torture an outlaw from the brotherhood without banners and learn that Sandor Clegane was with Arya Stark, and they later hear a similar story from the innkeep at the crossroads inn.[2]

The sellswords go to Maidenpool to find passage across the narrow sea to Essos. The docks are guarded by Lord Randyll Tarly's men, so the fool instead entertains at the Stinking Goose and buys drinks for sailors, hoping that the three outlaws can be smuggled from Westeros on a ship.[11][12] Dick Crabb cons Shagwell into buying a map to the Whispers, which he says is a popular smugglers' cove, but Dick omits that ships have not been there for thirty years.[12] The sellswords camp in the ruins after they arrive.[2]

Brienne has been tasked by Jaime with finding Sansa Stark, who has gone missing after the death of King Joffrey I Baratheon. Sansa is believed to be in the company of Dontos Hollard, another fool.[13] Brienne learns of Dick boasting of having "fooled a fool",[11] and Dick later agrees to escort Brienne to the Whispers so she can find the fool in question.[12]

When Brienne, Dick, and Podrick Payne arrive at the Whispers, Shagwell jumps down from a weirwood and breaks Dick's knee with his morningstar. Dick begs for mercy, but Shagwell crushes his face. Shagwell and Timeon begin talking to Brienne in an attempt to distract her while they surround her. While Brienne kills Timeon and Pyg, Podrick throws stones at Shagwell until he yields. Brienne makes him dig a grave for Dick beneath the weirwood. After he finishes digging, Shagwell lunges at Brienne with a rock, but she stabs him to death with a dagger while telling him to laugh. Brienne brings the heads of the three sellswords to Maidenpool and leaves their bodies for crows.[2][14]

Brienne later has nightmares involving Pyg, Timeon, and Shagwell.[14][15]
