Background
Most of Stannis's bannermen kneel to King Joffrey I Baratheon after Stannis's defeat in the Battle of the Blackwater.[4][5] Aside from garrisons at Storm's End and Dragonstone,[1] the remaining lords loyal to Stannis travel with him to defend the Wall and Castle Black from wildlings.[6] Joffrey dies at his wedding,[7] and he is succeeded by his younger brother, Tommen Baratheon.[8]
Siege
To remove Lord Mace Tyrell from King's Landing,[9] Queen Regent Cersei Lannister commands him to lay siege to the castle of Storm's End, which remains loyal to Stannis Baratheon and is held by Ser Gilbert Farring.[1] Ser Garlan Tyrell takes half of the Tyrell men back to the Reach to deal with Brightwater Keep, and Mace marches on Storm's End with the other half.[10]
When Mace arrives, he sets up two dozen mangonels, achieving little against the stout castle walls.[11] Some ships of the Redwyne fleet patrol Shipbreaker Bay to prevent Storm's End from being resupplied.[12]
Lord Tyrell hears that his daughter, Queen Margaery Tyrell, has been imprisoned at the Great Sept of Baelor by the High Sparrow. Leaving a token force at Storm's End under Lord Mathis Rowan,[13] Mace marches on King's Landing and orders Lord Randyll Tarly to return from Maidenpool and join him at the capital.[14]
After the landing of the Golden Company in the stormlands, Jon Connington plans his own attack on Storm's End in the name of Aegon Targaryen.[15] The small council later hears reports that Jon is marching on the castle.[16]
