One of the silent sisters' main functions is the collection and handling of the bodies of the dead, preparing them for funerals. There would seem to be more than one accepted methodolgy.  For Tywin Lannister the sisters removed his bowels and organs and drained his body of blood, stuffing it with salts and fragrant herbs (some form of embalming, presumably) for its journey back to Casterly Rock.{{Ref|aFfC|17}} However, since there are many references to a person's bones (rather than their body) being sent for burial, it would appear more usual for all flesh to be stripped from a deceased's bones.  Here again, there would appear to be two methods used - beetles and boiling.  When Barristan Selmy contemplates sending Prince Quentyn's remains back to Dorne he muses, "We need to strip the flesh from his bones.  Beetles, not boiling.  The silent sisters would have seen to it back home," implying that beetles are seen as the superior method.{{Ref|aDwD|70}}  A further reference to beetles comes when the skull of Gregor Clegane is stripped of flesh by this method (by Qyburn, rather than the sisters) before being sent to Dorne.{{Ref|aFfC|17}}

Silent sisters attend to the dead, by by Tristan Denecke © Fantasy Flight Games

The silent sisters, also referred to as the Stranger's wives,[1] death's handmaidens,[2] and the handmaidens of the Stranger,[3] are an order of women belonging to the Faith of the Seven. They are sworn to the service of the Stranger and have taken vows of chastity and silence. The silent sisters attend to the dead.[4] They are not to be confused with septas.

Duties

Silent sisters are shrouded in grey and keep their faces cowled except for their eyes.[5] People of Westeros are uneasy about and wary of the women; since the silent sisters prepare men for the grave, it is considered ill fortune to look on the face of death.[6] The belief that their tongues are removed is a myth; silent sisters are silent because of piety.[7][8]

It is said that theirs is a serene life, a life of prayer and contemplation and good works. They bring solace to the living and peace to the dead.[9] However, they also administer harsh discipline among their order.[10]

One of the silent sisters' main functions is the collection and handling of the bodies of the dead, preparing them for funerals. More frequently flesh is stripped from a deceased's bones with beetles or boiling. Sometimes the sisters remove the bowels and organs and drain a body of blood, stuffing it with salts and fragrant herbs.[11]

Girls and women are sometimes sent to become silent sisters as a punishment,[12] and it is said that the silent sisters are always glad to welcome widows.[9] Novices shave their heads, take cold baths, eat meatless meals, and wear roughspun robes. Disobedient novices can be caned.[10]

History

Silent sisters escorting the dead, by Dean Bloomfield © Fantasy Flight Games

Marla Sunderland rebelled against House Arryn during Aegon's Conquest,[13] but she was deposed by her younger brother Steffon with the failure of the Sistermen's Rebellion. After five years of imprisonment, Marla's tongue was removed and she was forced to join the silent sisters.[14]

When Queen Alysanne Targaryen visited Oldtown in 54 AC, she spent a day in prayer and contemplation with silent sisters at their motherhouse in the city.[15] Later in life, Alysanne considered renouncing her marriage to King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and instead joining the silent sisters.[10] In 84 AC, Princess Saera Targaryen was sent to Oldtown to serve with the silent sisters as a novice, but she fled for Lys the following year.[10]

The small council did not call for the silent sisters after learning of the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, so the king's body swelled and rotted as the greens kept his death a secret. Only after a week had passed were silent sisters finally allowed to prepare the corpse for burning.[16] During the ensuing Dance of the Dragons, septas and silent sisters were raped and violated by greens during the sack of Tumbleton after the First Battle of Tumbleton.[17] After his execution by Lord Cregan Stark during the Hour of the Wolf, the remains of Lord Larys Strong were given to the silent sisters.[18]

Maris Baratheon became a silent sister during the regency of Aegon III.[7] Lady Samantha Tarly ignored the command of the High Septon that she leave Lord Lyonel Hightower and join the silent sisters.[7]

During the reign of Aegon IV Targaryen, the king promised Ser Quentyn Ball a place in the Kingsguard, so Quentyn made his wife join the silent sisters in order to facilitate this.[19]

Alysanne Osgrey was sent to the order because her father, Ser Eustace, rebelled during the First Blackfyre Rebellion.[12] During the Great Spring Sickness nearly all of the silent sisters in King's Landing died of the plague.[12]

According to a semi-canon source,[20] Lord Tywin Lannister forced Rohanne and Cyrelle Tarbeck to join the silent sisters after the Reyne-Tarbeck rebellion.

A daughter of Ser Elys Waynwood was seduced by a sellsword, lost her bastard child by him, and joined the silent sisters.[21]

Quotes

If I had any sense I'd give you to the silent sisters. They cut the tongues out of girls who talk too much.[23]

A man would need to be a fool to rape a silent sister. Even to lay hands upon one … it's said they are the Stranger's wives, and their female parts are cold and wet as ice.[1]

Podrick: The silent sisters never speak. I heard they don't have tongues.
Meribald: Mothers have been cowing their daughters with that tale since I was your age. There was no truth to it then and there is none now. A vow of silence is an act of contrition, a sacrifice by which we prove our devotion to the Seven Above.[8]

Wylla, every time you open your mouth you make me want to send you to the silent sisters.[28]
