Sweetsleep is a drug that gives the gift of painless death.[1] In small doses it can be used to moderate fits.[2] Three doses of sweetsleep will cause the victim to slip into a sleep that they will never wake from. It has a very sweet taste and is best used in sweet foods, such as cakes, pies and honeyed wines.[3] It smells sweet. If put in milk it is called sweetmilk.

Doses

  • a few grains - will slow a pounding heart and stop a hand form shaking and make a man feel calm and strong.[3]
  • a pinch - will grant a night of deep and dreamless sleep.[3][4]
  • three pinches - will produce a sleep that does not end.[3]

A Feast for Crows

In the Eyrie, after Sweetrobin flings his bowl of porridge across the room, Littlefinger suggests to Maester Colemon that he should perhaps put a pinch of sweetsleep in Sweetrobin's milk, to calm him down and to stop his shaking fits. [4] The Maester agrees to one small pinch, not too often. Littlfinger then tells him to give him a pinch before meeting the Lords Declarant later.[4]

In the House of Black and White the waif teaches Arya Stark about the gentlest of poisons, sweesleep. [3]

Alayne Stone tells Maester Colemon to give Sweetrobin a cup of sweetmilk in order to keep him calm during the long descent to the Gates of the Moon. Maester Colemon objects telling her that Sweetrobin had a cup of sweetmilk less than three days ago. Alayne reminds him that he wanted another cup last night but Colemon had refused him.[4] Maester Colemon explains that he has told Littlefinger that a pinch of sweetsleep will prevent the shaking but it does not leave the flesh, he tries to tell her what the effects of sweetsleep with have on the boy in time but Alayne tells him that Lord Roberts must be kept calm at all costs.[2]

Maester Colemon agrees to a cup of sweetmilk before the decent and a cup of sweetmilk before the feast once they arrive at the Gates of the Moon. He tells Alayne that this must be the last time they give Sweetrobin sweetsleep for at least six months, or longer.[2] Alayne tells him to take that up with Littlefinger.
