Walder Frey, better known as Little Walder, is the son of Merrett Frey. His personal coat of arms is the twin towers of House Frey quartered with the brindled boar of House Crakehall and the plowman of House Darry.[1]

Appearance

Walder Frey is a big and portly lad and is known as Little Walder in a mocking joke. He is tall and stout, with a red face and big round belly.[2]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Little Walder is present at the Twins when Catelyn Tully came to treat with Lord Walder Frey. As part of the terms, he was sent to Winterfell to be fostered.

A Clash of Kings

Little Walder is sent to Winterfell to become a ward. Accompanied by his cousin, Big Walder, he quickly makes friends with Rickon Stark, but is not friendly with Bran Stark, nor the Reed children. More often than not he wins the game "Lord of the Crossing".[3] During the harvest feast, Little Walder trained with the knights from White Harbor.[4] When word of Ser Stevron Frey's death arrives at Winterfell, Little Walder and Big Walder argue over who is next in line to inherit, showing no sadness at their relative's passing.[5] Osha said Little Walder's name is appropriate as he is Big on the outside and Little on the inside. Both Walders were taken captive by Ramsay Snow during the Sack of Winterfell.[6]

A Storm of Swords

A letter is sent to the Twins signed by Little Walder and Big Walder claiming Theon Greyjoy burned Winterfell. Lame Lothar Frey conveyed this false report to Robb Stark.

A Feast for Crows

Little Walder is listed as a squire to Ramsay Bolton.[7]

A Dance with Dragons

Theon Greyjoy notes Little Walder is becoming more and more like Ramsay Bolton which disturbs both Theon Greyjoy and even Little Walder's cousin Big Walder.[8]

Little Walder had been offered as a husband to Wylla Manderly by Rhaegar Frey when the Freys went to White Harbour to return the bones of Wendel Manderly to his father Wyman Manderly.[9]

Little Walder's body was discovered in the ruined keep of Winterfell after the wedding of Ramsay Snow to "Arya Stark" (actually Jeyne Poole). Theon Greyjoy suspected Mance Rayder and his wildling spearwives of the deed but they claimed it was no work of theirs. According to Big Walder, Little Walder was looking for a Manderly knight who owed him a coin Walder won from a game of dice. Hosteen Frey however accused Wyman Manderly of killing or ordering the death, Wyman states he wasn't responsible although he said...

"Though mayhaps this was a blessing. Had he lived he would have grown up to be a Frey". [10]

This caused an enraged Hosteen to attack Manderly, leading to a confrontation that left six White Harbour men and two Freys dead. It took the intervention of Bolton's men to prevent a battle within Winterfell.[11]

Quotes about Little Walder

"The big one they call little, it comes to me he's well named. Big outside, little inside, and mean down to the bones. " [12]
