A Game of Thrones

After being a member of the Night's Watch for less than a year he was given command of Gared, and Will, and set to track a band of wildling raiders. He was killed by the Others and rose as a wight during that ill-fated ranging. At that time he was about 18 years.

While Lord Commander Mormont is telling Tyrion Lannister about the conditions on the wall to gain his support, he mentions how he sent Ser Waymar Royce ranging with two of his best men even though Waymar was green because he beseeched that he be sent out with his own command because Mormont did not want to offend his father. Mormont now laments that he was a fool to do this, and his Raven repeats “fool, fool.” The commander then continues that one of the men he sent, Gared, had been on the wall longer than the commander, and he would never have believed that the man would have turned, but Lord Eddard had sent him his head. There had been no word on the other two men.[3]
