Born In c. 297 AL [2] [3], Unnamed village, in the western shore of Gods Eye, Riverlands
Books

Weasel is a girl who lived in the Riverlands. Her real name is unknown. She was found by Yoren on the march north from King's Landing. She was named "Weasel" by Lommy who claimed she looked like one.[4]

A Clash of Kings

Yoren leads a group of fresh recruits for the Night's Watch through the Riverlands. He decides to avoid the kingsroad and leads his group around the western shore of Gods Eye. At some point the group notices flames to the north of their current location. They wait hours for the flames to die out and head towards their former location. There, they discover a burned down village and surrounding fields. Yoren, Murch, and Cutjack go searching inside the village, while the rest of their group waits outside. [2] Yoren returns with a little girl in his arms. Murch and Cutjack transport a woman whose right and has been severed at the elbow. Arya Stark estimates the unnamed girl to be about two years old. The girl constantly cries, whimpering as if something is caught in her throat. Arya estimates that the girl either can't talk yet, or she has forgotten how to do so.[2]

Arya rides ahead of the wagons, trying to avoid listening to the constant cries of the girl and to the unnamed woman whispering pleas for mercy. [2] The "one-armed woman" dies by the evening of that day. She was never able to identify herself, nor whether she was related to the girl. [2]

Yoren leads his group towards a small town. Hoping to find boats and secure transportation to Harrentown. He plans to seek shelter for his group at Harrenhal, claiming that Shella Whent has always been a friend of the Watch. Arya hopes that Lady Whent can help "the crying girl" (Weasel). [1] The group finds the town to be deserted. The buildings and fields have not been burned but the local population seems to have fled. Arya finds the situation scary and reminiscent of the burnt holdfast where they had found "the crying girl". She figures that the people must have been terrified to leave their homes and properties behind. And wonders what scared them away. [1]

Yoren splits most of his group to search parties, trying to locate anyone left behind by the locals or anything of use to them. Ten of the recruits are left behind to guard their wagons and the unnamed little girl. [1] The search parties find some food and tools, but no human life. Yoren decides to spend the night in a nearby stone holfdast, though Arya protests that they should follow the example of the locals and evacuate the area. Behind the stone walls, "the crying girl" continues to whimper and cry. Until Hot Pie offers her a portion of the goose which serves as their meal. The hungry girl quickly eats the offered meat and looks for more. [1]

Later, Arya tries to sleep, using a straw pallet as a makeshift bed. She is at some distance from "the crying girl", but she can still hears the girl crying. She is somewhat frustrated with the constant sound of the girl's voice. She wishes for "the crying girl" to be quiet and let her sleep. [1] Arya suddenly wakes with the impression of hearing a wolf howling. Shortly after, Kurz blows his hunting horn. Alerting the recruits that horsemen approach their location. Arya and Gendry climb to a parapet and inspect the unit approaching them. "The crying girl" approaches Arya and clutches her leg. Arya glances down in alarm and discovers who is holding her. She wrenches her leg free of the clutching arms and then shoves the girl away. [1] Arya calls the girl "stupid" for following them to the parapet. She then instructs the girl to run and hide. [1]

The cavalry unit serves under Amory Lorch, whose herald suggests that Yoren and his group are working for Beric Dondarrion. The standard-bearer of Lorch insists that Yoren wears a black cloak, which to him resembles the black field in the sigil of House Dondarrion. Yoren insists that there is no lightning bolt anywhere on his cloak. Gendry realizes that Lorch and his men are merely seeking a pretext to attack. A skirmish between the two groups follows. [1] Yoren soon realizes the battle is lost. He instructs Arya to herd whoever she can and try to escape though a tunnel underneath the barn. While performing her task, Arya notices "the crying girl". The unnamed toddler is seated on the ground, surrounded by smoke and slaughter. Arya grabs the girl by the hand and pulls her on her feet. The girl refuses to walk on her own, even when Arya slaps her to get her going. Arya resolves to drag along "the crying girl" with her right hand, while she holds Needle in her left hand. [1]

Hot Pie notices that dragging the girl slows down "Arry". He shouts for his friend to leave the girl behind if she continues to resist. The girl does resist but Arya stubbornly keeps dragging her. Hot Pie refuses to help them and runs to escape. Gendry returns from his own escape attempt to help them out. He hoists "the crying girl" over his shoulder and instructs Arya to run. When the three reach the tunnel, it turns out to be narrow. Gendry can not carry the girl through it. Arya suggests they pull and push the girl to safety. Gendry decides that Arya should go first, the girl second, and he himself third and last. Arya instead instructs him to save the girl. [1] Arya delays her own escape to rescue Biter, Jaqen H'ghar, and Rorge flom the flames surrounding them. [1]

"The crying girl" is among the remnants of the recruits who survive the skirmish. Kurz suggests that they should keep heading north. The rest of survivors go along with his idea. They continue their trail along the western shore of Gods Eye. [4] During this part of their trail, the unnamed girl finally stops crying. Making the term "the crying girl" inaccurate. The group had to decide on a name for their charge. Lommy Greenhands suggests the name "Weasel", claiming that the girl resembles this animal. Arya can not really see the resemblance, but still agrees to use the new name. [4] Weasel has the bad habit of eating mud.[4] She also takes to following Arya and Gendry around. [4]

Arya climbs a tree and observes a fishing village to the north of their current location. She climbs down to report her findings to Gendry. Weasel is attracted by the sound of her voice and creeps out from the bushes. Arya notices that the mouth of their charge is filthy. As Arya continues to talk, Weasel approaches her and clutches her arms around Arya's leg. Arya mentally notes that lately Weasel keeps repeating this move. [4] Arya continues with her report. Meanwhile, she tugs at the hair of Weasel. Matted hair which she can not detangle. Arya wonders whether she should hack off Weasel's hair. [4]

Arya and Gendry volunteer for a scouting mission. Trying to determine who currently resides in the village, and whether they can seek refuge there. Gendry instructs Hot Pie to keep Weasel from following them. Hot Pie complains about this task. The last time he tried to prevent Weasel from following Arya and Gendry, the girl kicked him. Gendry threatens to personally kick Hot Pie, if he fails to keep Weasel in place. Then he leaves without waiting for an answer. [4] At some distance from the rest of their group, Gendry expresses his frustration with them. He finds Lommy, Weasel, and Hot Pie to be useless. Slowing the more capable Gendry and Arya down. He is certain they are going to get them all killed. Arya asks Gendry to leave Weasel alone. She defends the girl, claiming that Weasel is simply scared and hungry. [4] While talking, Arya glances behind to make sure that Weasel is not following them. She is relieved that Hot Pie managed to stop Weasel. [4]

Gendry is caught during their scouting mission. Arya returns alone. She steps out of the woods right behind Lommy and Hot Pie and spooks the two boys. Weasel comes running up, trying to approach Arya. Arya places an arm around Weasel. Arya wants to help Gendry escape and convinces Hot Pie to join her. Lommy, who can't walk on his own, is tasked with keeping Weasel from following them. Lommy grabs Weasel by the hand and pulls her close. [4]

Once in the village, Hot Pie gets startled by a crow and gives away their position. He surrenders to the nearest guard. Arya is captured by several approaching guards. They have just been caught by Gregor Clegane and the Mountain's men. Hot Pie leads their captors back to their camp. He mentions that there is a girl with them, Weasel. The guards, however, find Lommy alone. [4] Lommy explains that the guards made a lot of noise during their approach. Weasel heard them and ran off into the woods. Arya hopes that Weasel will manage to run as far away as she can. That the girl will manage to run, to hide, and to never return. [4]

A Feast for Crows

The big eyes and hollow face of the Waif remind Arya of the original Weasel. [5]

Named after Weasel

Gregor and his men lead their surviving captives to Harrenhal. These captives are kept to serve Tywin Lannister and his forces. Arya is examined by Amabel and Harra. When Harra asks for the name of this girl, Arya has to think for an alias. She needs a feminine name and names the first girl she can think of: Weasel. She claims that Lommy called her Weasel. The old women take her word on the matter. [6] Arya keeps this alias while serving House Lannister. [7] [8] [9] When Roose Bolton takes over Harrenhal, he chooses "Weasel" as his personal cupbearer. Roose finds the name Weasel to be improper and asks for her birth name. Arya claims that her full name is Nymeria, and that her nickname is Nan. Roose takes her word on the subject and starts calling her Nan. Arya abandons her previous alias [9]

In the House of Black and White, the Kindly Man asks for the name of Arya. She tries to re-use several of her old aliases: Salty, Squab, Nan, Weasel, and Arry. He dismisses them all as as lies. She eventually resolves to introduce herself as Arya of House Stark. This time, the Kindly Man accepts her answer. [10]
