Will is a ranger of the Night's Watch. The prologue is written from his point-of-view. This chapter describes his search for a band of wildling rangers until he is killed by his commander, Ser Waymar Royce, who has been turned into a wight.[1]

History

Will had been a poacher before joining the Night's Watch, hunting in House Mallister's woods. Lord Mallister's freeriders caught him skinning a buck and gave him the choice of taking the black or losing a hand. He chose the former. When A Game of Thrones begins, he has already been on the Wall for four years. Will's stealth and hunting experience proved useful for scouting as a ranger.[1]

During a ranging into the Haunted Forest, Will scouted ahead and discovered the bodies of eight wildlings in a camp. Will reported his finding to Gared and their commander Ser Waymar Royce. While Will and Gared wanted to go back to Wall because they felt that something was watching them and it had grown very cold, Waymar insisted that they examine the bodies. Will took Waymar to the camp, leaving Gared behind to guard their horses. When they got there, the bodies were gone. Waymar concluded the men had not been dead and ordered Will to climb a tree and look for a fire. While Will was up the tree, the Others arrived and killed Waymar. Will climbed down after the Others had gone, but Waymar, now a wight, strangled him.[1]

The TV series

In the TV series the roles of Gared and Will are swapped. Gared is beheaded by an Other and Will flies south until he is captured and executed as a deserter.[2] Will is played by Bronson Webb.[3] See also Will on the Game of Thrones wiki.
