Willis Fell was a knight from House Fell and a member of the Kingsguard during the reigns of kings Viserys I Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen.[3] He served as Lord Commander of Aegon III Targaryen's Kingsguard.[2]

History

Dance of the Dragons

After the death of King Viserys I Targaryen in 129 AC, Willis choose the side of King Aegon II Targaryen and the greens in the ensuing civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.[3] In preparation for Aegon's coronation, Queen Alicent Hightower dispatched Ser Willis to inform her son Prince Aemond Targaryen of the king's death and to bring him before the small council.[4]

When King's Landing fell to the blacks, Willis and the royal family were noticeably absent from the city.[5] Lord Larys Strong, the master of whisperers, had smuggled King Aegon II, Princess Jaehaera, and Prince Maelor Targaryen to safety through a passage within Maegor's Holdfast known only to himself. The party was accompanied by Ser Willis and Ser Rickard Thorne of the Kingsguard. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen offered rewards for information about the vanished "false knights", and King Aegon's rival also sent knights inquisitor in search of Willis and Ser Rickard.[1][3]

Willis was commanded to see Princess Jaehaera safely to Lord Borros Baratheon at Storm's End, while Ser Rickard was sent to bring Prince Maelor to Lord Ormund Hightower. Neither man was informed of the other's destination, so neither could betray the other if captured.[3][6] Willis succeeded in his mission and safely delivered the princess to Storm's End.[7]

Lord Commander

After the death of Aegon II, Lady Elenda Baratheon charged Willis with escorting Princess Jaehaera, three of her daughters, and her father Lord Royce Caron to King's Landing for the coronation of Aegon III Targaryen.[8] Shortly after the king's wedding to Jaehaera in 131 AC, Aegon III rose Willis to Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, as he was the sole surviving knight of Viserys' Kingsguard. Ser Marston Waters was named Willis' second and, as Willis and Marston were former greens, the rest of the Kingsguard was filled with former blacks.[2]

As the Lord Commander, Willis served on the small council during the king's regency. When deciding on the king's heir, Willis was in favor of naming Princess Rhaena Targaryen for she had a dragon, while her sister Baela did not. Willis reaffirmed his opinion after Baela wed her cousin Lord Alyn Velaryon without the council's opinion, disapproving of Alyn's illegitimate birth. The regents concurred and Rhaena was named Aegon's heir.[2]

When the Winter Fever struck the capital in 133 AC, Willis succumbed to the disease.[2] The king named Ser Robin Massey as his successor.[9]
