A beet is a beetroot, the taproot portion of the beet plant.

About

Beets are commonly eaten vegetables in Westeros and beyond. Some characters do not like beets, most notably Prince Tommen.[1][2] Sweet beets are grown in profusion in Volantis, and are served with almost every meal. There, they make a cold soup of the beets which is as thick and rich as purple honey.[3]

History

Prince Daemon Targaryen and Nettles were sharing a simple supper of boiled beef and beets when Maester Norren gave Daemon the letter he received from Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen ordering the death of Nettles.[4]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

During the Winterfell harvest feast, Bran Stark sends beets and turnips to the Little Walder and Big Walder Frey because Ser Rodrik Cassel insists he give them something.[2]

A Feast for Crows

When Kevan Lannister meets with Queen Regent Cersei Lannister for dinner, they eat a simple supper of beets and bread and bloody beef[5] When Cersei has Falyse Stokeworth and her husband, Ser Balman Byrch, as guests for dinner buttered beets feature on the menu.[1]

A Dance with Dragons

At the Fishermonger's Square of Volantis, Prince Quentyn Martell sees several vendors frying chunks of fish with onions and beets, and notes how popular beets are in the city.[3]

Dolorous Edd tells Jon Snow boiled beef and beets are for supper.[6] There are pickled beets in the vaults of Castle Black.[7]

Aboard the Selaesori Qhoran Tyrion Lannister eats a supper of buttered beets, cold fish stew and biscuits that could be used to drive nails.[8]
