Ebony

Ebony is a black wood usable as a building material. It is unknown if there is a connection with the black-barked trees of Qarth, the ironwoods of Westeros, or the nightwoods of Essos.

Material

The house of Tobho Mott in King's Landing has double doors decorated with a hunting scene in ebony and weirwood.[1]

The doors of the House of Black and White in Braavos are made of ebony and weirwood. A statue of the Lion of Night is located within the temple on an ebony throne.[2] Faceless Men gather beneath the temple in a chamber housing tall chairs of ebony and weirwood.[3]

Some inhabitants of Asshai ride in palanquins of ebony and iron.[4]

History

Ebony from the Summer Isles was popular in the Valyrian Freehold.[5]

According to Mushroom, Sandoq the Shadow played a stringed instrument of ebony and goldenheart for Larra Rogare.[6]

Maester Caleotte designed a rolling chair with wheels of ebony and iron for Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne.[7]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Xaro Xhoan Daxos gives Daenerys Targaryen a palanquin of ebony and gold.[8] Within the House of the Undying, Daenerys sees doors of ebony and weirwood. Drogon flies to the top of a door and bites at the carved wood.[9]

A Storm of Swords

Following the siege of Meereen, Daenerys replaces the harpy throne in the Great Pyramid's audience chamber with a simple bench of polished ebony.[10][11]

A Dance with Dragons

Ser Balon Swann delivers the Mountain's skull to Sunspear in a box of carved ebony.[12]
