The Goldroad[1][2] or goldroad,[3][4] also called the gold road,[5] is a major road in southern Westeros.

Route

The Goldroad begins at the Lion Gate on the western wall of King's Landing in the crownlands.[6] The Map of the South from A Dance with Dragons, the "Westeros" map from The Lands of Ice and Fire, and the "Riverlands" map from The World of Ice & Fire depict the Goldroad running west and crossing the river which connects the Gods Eye and the Blackwater Rush, and southeast of Stoney Sept the Goldroad then crosses south of the Blackwater itself.[7][8][9]

In contrast, "The Known World" map from The Lands of Ice and Fire, depicts the Goldroad crossing south of the Blackwater soon after leaving King's Landing (thereby avoiding the Gods Eye river altogether) and then remaining south of the Blackwater during its route west.[10] "The West" map from The Lands of Ice and Fire, however, presents the road as crossing the Blackwater near King's Landing, returning north of the Blackwater after bypassing the Gods Eye river, and then crossing south of the Blackwater a final time before continuing its westward journey.[11]

The Goldroad next runs through open plains[3] in the northern Reach.[9]

The castle of Deep Den guards the Goldroad as it passes through the southeastern hills of the westerlands.[9] The road ends at Lannisport[2] and Casterly Rock, seat of House Lannister.[7][9]

History

The goldroad was made during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, who was aided by his master of coin, Lord Martyn Tyrell.[4] Its route passes near the Field of Fire.[3]
