Lord of Duskendale[1][2][3][4] and Lady of Duskendale are titles historically held by the head of House Darklyn of Duskendale in the crownlands. After the extinction of the house in the aftermath of the Defiance of Duskendale in 277 AC, the Darklyn's seat, the Dun Fort, and lordship were given to House Rykker.[1]

History

During Aegon's Conquest, Aegon I Targaryen, together with his bastard half-brother Orys Baratheon, defeated Lord Darklyn of Duskendale and Lord Mooton of Maidenpool in his first test. Lord Darklyn died during the battle and was succeeded by his son, who yielded to Aegon.[5]

When the realm began to turn against King Maegor I Targaryen in favor of his nephew, Prince Jaehaerys, Lord Darklyn was among the score of lesser lords who gathered at the King's command in 48 AC.[6] Along with Lords Towers and Staunton, Lord Darklyn yielded the Red Keep to Jaehaerys, Princess Rhaena, and Princess Alysanne Targaryen. The three lords were sent to the black cells, but were eventually pardoned by King Jaehaerys I after surrendering some of their land.[7] Several lords formerly loyal to Maegor traveled to Dragonstone to talk to the King while he resided there during his minority, including Lord Darklyn.[8]

By 51 AC, Lord Darklyn had died and had been succeeded by his son. This new Lord Darklyn hosted King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne Targaryen during their first royal progress. After some angry Septas tried to assassinate the queen in Jonquil's Pool at Maidenpool, it was decided that the queen needed a female sworn shield to protect her in places where men were not allowed to go. Lord Darklyn sent his bastard half-sister, Jonquil Darke, to court as per the king's request.[9]

In 72 AC, a young Lord Darklyn married a daughter of Lord Theomore Manderly of White Harbor.[10]

During the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Gunthor Darklyn attended Rhaenyra Targaryen's coronation and sat on her black council; in retaliation Aegon II Targaryen's Hand, Ser Criston Cole, beheaded Gunthor after the sack of Duskendale.[11] After the death of her husband, Lady Meredyth Darklyn, led the family for the rest of the war.[12] She briefly sheltered Queen Rhaenyra after she fled King's Landing.[13]

When Lord Brynden Rivers marched on Whitewalls to quash the Second Blackfyre Rebellion, among the lords who came in support was Lord Darklyn.[14]

In 277 AC, Lord Denys Darklyn asked King Aerys II for certain rights for his citizens and a new town charter for Duskendale. The king refused and Denys refused to pay taxes to the crown. This led to an escalation of events that saw the capture of Aerys.[15][1] Denys remained defiant despite the army led by Lord Tywin Lannister, Aerys's Hand, camped outside his walls. The Defiance ended when Ser Barristan Selmy sneaked into the Dun Fort, and rescued his king. Denys opened his gates and begged for mercy but his entire family was executed on Aerys's orders.[15][1]

During a feast thrown by Aerys II when Cersei Lannister first arrived at court, Lord Rykker made fun of Tywin.[16]
