The retaking of Rook's Rest occurred during the Dance of the Dragons.

Prelude

Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon, Meleys, were killed by King Aegon II Targaryen atop Sunfyre and Prince Aemond Targaryen atop Vhagar during the first battle at Rook's Rest. Aemond and Ser Criston Cole took Rook's Rest, beheading Lord Staunton and slaying his garrison. Wounded and unable to fly away, Sunfyre remained near the castle. The garrison left by Criston fed the dragon calves and sheep.[1]

Battle

Lord Walys Mooton led a hundred knights from Maidenpool to Crackclaw Point, where they joined a host of Brunes, Celtigars, and Crabbs. The blacks surprised the garrison of greens left behind at Rook's Rest by Criston Cole. After retaking the castle, Walys and his bravest men slew Sunfyre's guards and then tried to end the wounded dragon while he slept. Sunfyre killed threescore men, including Lord Mooton, however, and forced the rest to flee.[1]

Aftermath

A fortnight later Lord Manfryd Mooton found the charred body of his brother, Walys, but Sunfyre had mysteriously disappeared.[1]
