Appearance
Although Rhaego died before birth, and only appeared as an adult in dreams and visions, according to those, he would have grown up to be tall, with Dothraki copper skin and Valyrian silver-gold hair.[5][6] He would have had almond-shaped violet eyes.[5]

A Game of Thrones

On her fourteenth birthday, Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen realizes she is pregnant.[7]
In Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys performs the stallion heart ceremony, and gives her unborn child the name "Rhaego", after her late brother, Rhaegar Targaryen. The crones of the dosh khaleen prophesy that Rhaego will be the stallion who mounts the world.[2]
In King's Landing, King Robert I Baratheon, the Usurper, hears that Daenerys is pregnant, and orders her assassination.[8] Daenerys believes her family's throne should be conquered for her unborn son, and attempts to persuade her husband, Khal Drogo, to invade Westeros. However, Drogo has no interest in doing so, until Daenerys is rescued by Ser Jorah Mormont from drinking poisoned wine in the Western Market of Vaes Dothrak. They learn that King Robert has promised a lordship and lands to whoever kills Daenerys and her child. Furious, Drogo vows to conquer the Seven Kingdoms for his son.[1]
After Drogo becomes sick from an infected wound, Daenerys has the slave and maegi Mirri Maz Duur save his life by using blood magic. Though Mirri warns her that "only death may pay for life", Daenerys insists. Mirri performs a sorcerous ritual, sacrificing Drogo's red stallion in his tent, singing and dancing with dark shadows whirling around her. As the ritual continues, Daenerys goes into labor, and Ser Jorah brings her into the tent so that Mirri can help her give birth.[9]
Daenerys falls into a fever, and dreams of her son, seeing him tall and proud, with Drogo's copper skin and her own silver-gold hair, violet eyes shaped like almonds. He smiles at her and begins to lift his hand towards her, but when he opens his mouth, fire pours out. She sees his heart burning through his chest, and in an instant he is gone, consumed like a moth by a candle, turned to ash.[5]
When Daenerys wakes, she learns that Rhaego was stillborn. According to Mirri Maz Duur, he was hideously deformed, blind, and was covered in dragon-like scales. He had a stub of a tail, and small leather wings like a bat. He was decayed, like he had been dead for years. Daenerys protests that Rhaego was alive and kicking before she entered the tent, but Mirri tells her that death was in the tent. When Daenerys realizes that it was Mirri's magic that had killed Rhaego, Mirri justifies her actions. She says that it had angered her god that Drogo's khalasar had burned her temple and enslaved her people, that Daenerys had known the true price was not Drogo's horse, and now there will be no stallion who mounts the world, burning cities and trampling nations to the ground. Mirri also implies, perhaps prophetically, that Daenerys will never again bear a living child.[5]
A Clash of Kings
In the House of the Undying, Daenerys has a vision of a tall lord with copper skin and silver-gold hair standing beneath the banner of a fiery stallion, a burning city behind him. This appears to be a vision of what might have been, had Rhaego survived to be the stallion who mounts the world.[6]
A Storm of Swords
In Slaver's Bay, Daenerys learns that Jorah Mormont had been informing on her to King Robert Baratheon.[10] Although shamed, Jorah refuses to beg for forgiveness, and insists Daenerys forgive him on account of his loyal service and love for her. Although Daenerys had planned to forgive him, she finds herself unable to, realizing it had been Jorah who had informed King Robert of her pregnancy, that a poisoner had tried to kill Rhaego because of him. Instead, she banishes Jorah from Meereen, swearing to kill him if she ever sees him again.[11]
A Dance with Dragons
While in Daznak's Pit, Daenerys reflects that she once ate a stallion heart to give strength to her unborn son, but that did not save Rhaego when Mirri Maz Duur murdered him in her womb. She remembers the words of the Undying Ones, "Three treasons shall you know." Daenerys thinks that Mirri Maz Duur was the first, Ser Jorah was the second, and Brown Ben Plumm was the third, and wonders if she is done with betrayals. Shortly thereafter, her dragon child, Drogon, appears in the skies above the pit.[12]
Quotes about Rhaego
One-eyed crone: What shall he be called, the stallion who mounts the world?
Daenerys: He shall be called Rhaego.
Dothraki: Rhaego, Rhaego, Rhaego, Rhaego![2]
Drogo: What is meaning, name Rhaego?
Daenerys: My brother Rhaegar was a fierce warrior, my sun-and-stars. He died before I was born. Ser Jorah says that he was the last of the dragons.
Drogo: Is good name, Dan Ares wife, moon of my life.[2]
—Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen
Jorah: The stallion is the khal of khals promised in ancient prophecy, child. He will unite the Dothraki into a single khalasar and ride to the ends of the earth, or so it was promised. All the people of the world will be his herd.
Daenerys: Oh. I named him Rhaego.
Jorah: A name to make the Usurper's blood run cold.[2]
Daenerys: My son... Rhaego... where is he? I want him.
Jhiqui: The boy... he did not live, Khaleesi.[5]—Daenerys Targaryen and Jhiqui
Monstrous. Twisted. I drew him forth myself. He was scaled like a lizard, blind, with the stub of a tail and small leather wings like the wings of a bat. When I touched him, the flesh sloughed off the bone, and inside he was full of graveworms and the stink of corruption. He had been dead for years.[5]
