A solar refers to a loft, upper room, or upper part of a medieval house, often used as the lord's private chamber.[1]

Solars in Westeros

Many castles and towers in Westeros have a solar. These include:

History

During the Golden Wedding, the young Jaehaerys I Targaryen granted audience to any lord or knight who wished a private word with him, agreeing to speak with them in his solar.[22]

In 78 AC, King Jaehaerys I summoned his son, Prince Vaegon Targaryen, in his solar and announced him he was sent to the Citadel.[23]

King Aegon III Targaryen used to supper in the tranquility of his solar with his wife, Queen Daenaera Velaryon, and his friend, Gaemon Palehair. It was during one of these meal that Gaemon a was poisoned.[24]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

In King's Landing, Eddard Stark and his daughters Sansa and Arya usually eat meals in the solar of the Tower of the Hand.[13]

The wight Othor attacks Lord Commander of the Night's Watch Jeor Mormont in his solar, but Jon Snow defeats it by setting it and the room on fire.[3]

A Clash of Kings

Acting Hand of the King Tyrion Lannister frequently does business in the solar of the Tower of the Hand.[25]

A Storm of Swords

Tywin Lannister has come to King's Landing and taken up the position of Hand of the King, and Tyrion is reluctant to consider the Hand's solar as no longer his.[26]

Jon Snow is accused of treachery by Ser Alliser Thorne in the solar in King's Tower of Castle Black.[27] Later, Stannis Baratheon demonstrates the fiery glow of Lightbringer to Samwell Tarly and Maester Aemon in that solar, radiance filling the room.[28]

A Feast for Crows

Petyr Baelish meets with Nestor Royce and the Lords Declarant in the Eyrie's solar.[29][30]
