History
Walton attended the Golden Wedding in King's Landing with his father, Lord Brandon Stark, and younger brother, Alaric, in 49 AC.[2] Brandon died soon after returning to the north and was succeeded by Walton.[1]
When the disgraced former Kingsguard knights, Ser Olyver Bracken and Ser Raymund Mallery, launched a mutiny of the Night's Watch in 50 AC, Lord Walton rode north to aid loyal black brothers in putting down the rebellion. After Walton beheaded Olyver with Ice at Rimegate, other mutineers fled beyond the Wall from Sable Hall. Walton pursued them into the haunted forest, but his party came under attack by giants. It is claimed that Lord Stark slew two giants before he was torn apart, with the surviving northmen bringing his body parts back to Castle Black.[3]
Alaric, who succeeded Walton as Lord of Winterfell, blamed King Jaehaerys I Targaryen for his brother's death, as the mutineers' lives had been spared by the young king after the wars of Maegor I Targaryen. Alaric showed Walton's tomb in the crypt of Winterfell to Jaehaerys when the king visited Winterfell in 58 AC.[3]
Quotes
Alaric: Walton lies down here in darkness in no small part thanks to you. Stars and Swords, the leavings of your seven gods, what are they to us? And yet you sent them to the Wall in their hundreds and their thousands, so many that the Night's Watch was hard pressed to feed them ... and when the worst of them rose up, the oathbreakers you had sent us, it cost my brother's life to put them down.
Jaehaery:: A grievous price, but that was never our intent. You have my regrets, my lord, and my gratitude.
Alaric: I would sooner have my brother.[3]
