Winter's Kings, or the Legends and Lineages of the Starks of Winterfell is a book written by Maester Childer about House Stark, the one-time Kings of Winter from Winterfell. It contains a rare fragment of an ancient ballad of Brandon the Builder and the children of the forest.[1]

In the ballad, Brandon the Builder was attempting to build the Wall, and sought help from the children of the forest. In order to meet with them, he was first taken to a secret place. To begin with, he could not comprehend what they were saying, but he eventually learned to understand their language, the True Tongue. During his time with them, the children sang one of their songs, and its meaning was recorded in the ballad.[1]

The ballad describes the children speaking the True Tongue as sounding like the wind through leaves, rain on water, or the sound of stones in a brook. It is one of the few fragments believed to have been passed down from the time of the First Men that describes what the children of the forest sang about, and was referred to in Maester Yandel's The World of Ice and Fire.[1]
