Synopsis
Jeor Mormont leads a large expedition of the Night's Watch beyond the Wall to search for Waymar Royce and Benjen Stark. The village of Whitetree is the fourth village they have passed that has been deserted. Mormont has the men search the village but the only thing they find is a Hearttree. A hollow has been made in the tree and within it they find a man’s skull. His remains have been burnt. Mormont wonders why the Wildlings burn their dead, but Jon remembers the Wight's weakness to fire and silently thinks he knows why.
Mormont instructs Jon to find Sam and have him send a raven back to Castle Black.
The silence of the woods and the emptiness of the villages makes the Black Brothers uneasy. Strangely enough Sam, the self proclaimed coward, has gotten used to it. After releasing the raven they ride on and Jon wonders if their enemy, whatever it is, will find them before they find it.
