Synopsis

Arya's training is almost complete and she is deemed ready for her first assasination, for which she will need her first new face. The Kindly Man takes her to a hidden chamber where the walls are covered with hundreds of mask-like faces, and it is revealed that people who come to the Temple of Black and White have their faces removed and added to this collection after they die. The face he chooses for Arya is that of a young girl who was abused to the point of permanent disfigurement, and who came to the Temple of Black and White to beg for her own death.

In a bizarre ritual that is halfway between magic and surgery, the Kindly Man bonds Arya's new face to her skull, and warns her that she will have bad dreams that night. His promise proves to be true, and that night Arya dreams of the abuse that was suffered by girl whose face she now wears. When she wakes up, she is given her first target: an elderly man who is running an insurance scam involving Bravosi ships.

The target is always accompanied by two guards, and the Kindly Man has forbidden her to kill anyone other than her target, so Arya must stalk the target for days to find an opportunity. She eventually dispatches him by slipping a poisoned coin into the purse of man that is on his way to do business with her target, and when the target dies when he bites the coin to test it's validity. After Arya performs her first assassination, she is made an acolyte. She is to begin her first apprenticeship with Izembaro.
