[[Jon Snow|Jon]] climbs the stairs to [[Bran Stark|Bran]]'s room with [[Ghost]] beside him, thinking that it might be the last time.  [[Catelyn Tully|Catelyn]] is there, having never left Bran's side for close to a fortnight, sleeping and eating there, which is why Jon has been avoiding the room. Now there was no more time. When he enters, she resents Jon's presence, asking why he was here. She tells him to leave, which once would send him crying, but now only makes him angry. She threatens to call the guards, and Jon tells her to go ahead, but she does not and he takes that as acceptance. Bran is emaciated and shrunken, and covers over his legs look wrong. Jon asks him not to die, that everyone is waiting for him to wake up. Bran’s direwolf howls again. He remembers how much Bran had been looking forward to the journey before him. Then he tells Bran how he has to go today before the snows come, uncle [[Benjen Stark|Benjen]] is waiting for him for the trip to [[the Wall]]. Catelyn suddenly says that she had been wishing for Bran to stay home with her, and her wish seems to have been granted. Jon says it is not her fault, and she lashes out at him. As he is leaving, she tells Jon that it should have been him.

Robb asks about his mother, and Jon tell him she was kind. Robb then tells him that next time he sees him he will be all in black. Jon and Robb hug farewell, and then Jon says he has one more farewell to make. He goes to see [[Arya Stark|Arya]], who is repacking her things ([[Nymeria]] is helping), not having folded them well enough the first time for Septa Mordain. Arya tells him that she was afraid he was gone, and they would not let her go outside to say goodbye. Jon says he has a secret present for her, tells Arya to close the door. Arya does and leaves Nymeria to guard it. He gives her a sword, a narrow one. It was made special, and is like a swords used in [[Braavos]] and the other [[Free Cities]]. He tells her that she will have to work with the blade every day. He shows her how to hold it and then tells her that her first lesson is to stick them with the pointy end. He then warns her not to tell Sansa. Arya runs to him for a last hug. Just before he leaves, Jon tells her that all the best swords have a name, and she then asks what it is and he tells her it’s her very favorite thing and then say "[[Needle]]" together.
