Dany is looking over a vast empty, green, flat plain that reaches to the horizon when Jorah Mormont rides up next to her and tells her that she is looking over the Dothraki Sea. Looking behind, Dany sees she has outdistance the rest of Drogo's khalasar, and they were now climbing the ridge. She can see her brother Viserys struggling with his riding, and she knew he was miserable. Before leaving, Illyrio had offered to let Viserys stay Pentos, but Viserys had told him that he was going to join the khalasar to ensure that Drogo will support his bid for the crown and if he tries to cheat him, he will see what happens when one wakes the dragon. Valirio had blinked at that and wished him good fortune.

Dany tells Jorah to wait there, and to tell the others to stay, that she commands it. Jorah tells her that she is starting to sound like a queen and Dany tells him she is talking like a khaleesi. Over the days of travel her body had hardened so that she no longer had open saddle sores and unbearable pain after a day’s riding. During the day and evening Drogo ignores her, spending time talking with his blood riders, drinking and racing his horses. Dany was left to eat meals alone or with her brother or Jorah. Every night Drogo would come and ride her from behind, which Dany was grateful for since she could cry into her pillow. Dany was miserable until she had a dragon dream again, but in this one the dragon engulfs her in flame, and she reveled in it. The next day the pain seems less and her attitude has changed so much so that her hand maidens noticed the change. After that each day was easier. One of her hand maidens been given the responsibility to teach her ride like the Dothraki, but it was the horse that taught her more. Since the Dothraki do not name their animals, she just calls her horse silver. From then on she found pleasure in the new sights in the journey, and even started to enjoy the sex with Drogo.

Daenerys decides to dismount and take off her boots so she can bury her toes in the earth. Viserys is suddenly there, screaming and grabbing her. Viserys states he is furious that she commanded him to stay on the ridge, telling her she will not command the dragon and calling her a slut. She shoves him back, but before Viserys can attack her, Jhogo uses  his whip to catch him around the neck and pull him to the ground. Irri tells her that Jhogo asks if he should kill Viserys, but Dany replies that she does not want him harmed. Jorah tells her that he had told Viserys to stay on the ridge. Dany now sees Viserys as a pitiful thing and tells them to take his horse; among the Dothraki a man that does not ride is not a man. Viserys, now able to shout after catching his breath, shouts for Jorah Mormont to attack her but Mormont, after making a decision, tells Dany he should walk, and takes his horse away. To his shame Viserys has to walk all the way back to the camp.

As she enters her tent, Daenerys sees a finger of light touch her dragon eggs and, for a moment, she sees scarlet flames before her eyes. When she goes to touch her eggs they feel hot, which she attributes to the sunshine during the day. Dany remembers all of the stories about other magical creatures and wonders why there should not also be dragons.
Daenerys is amazed that she had hit Viserys and state to Mormont that she waked the dragon. Ser Jorah replies that Viserys is not the Dragon; Rhaegar was the last dragon. Ser Jorah asks her if she would want her brother to have the king, and she realizes that he would not be a good king. Dany asks if the small people are waiting for his return and Ser Jorah tells her that the small people only want to survive. Now Dany states to Ser Jorah that Viserys would never take the Seven Kingdoms, realizing that she had known this for a long time; he could not lead and army even if her husband gave him one, the only knight following him reviles him, and the Dothraki mock of him.

She races her silver away from Ser Jorah and the others. It is dust by the time she returns to the khalasar. She thinks how there would be laughter in the khalasar about what happened, and by the time her brother was able to return everyone in the camp would know he was a walker. When she enters her tent she can see a finger of light touch her dragon eggs, and can see scarlet flame before her eyes and then they were gone. Touching an egg it feels hot, and she thinks it is probably from the sun during the day. She thinks of all stories about other magical creatures and magic, and thinks why there should not also be dragons too. Her handmaidens tell her that dragons are dead, killed by men, and that they are evil beasts. Two of her handmaidens are from of an age with Dany, taken as slaves after Drogo destroyed their father’s khalasar, but Doreah was 20 and from a pleasure house in Lys. Doreah tells her a story about how the moon was an egg, that had been two moons in the sky but one came too close to the sun and cracked, releasing a thousand of dragons. This is why the dragons breath flame. Someday the other moon will crack and the dragons will return. The other handmaidens make fun of the story, stating that the moon is god. As her handmaidens tend to her, she thinks about dragons.

Her Dothraki handmaidens, Irri and Jhiqui, tell her that dragons were all killed by men. However, her Lysene handmaiden Doreah, a former sex slave, tells Dany a story about a time when there were two moons in the sky, but one came to close to the sun and cracked, releasing the first dragons. The story ends by claiming that one day the other moon will crack and the dragons will return. The other handmaidens make fun of the story, saying that the moon is a goddess.

She orders Doreah to stay with her for dinner, ordering the other two to leave. When Drogo returns she tells him that they should go outside because Dothraki customs say that everything of importance has to be done under to open sky. He is about to take her from behind, but she tells him that she wants to see his face climbs onto him. She rides him as fiercely as she had ridden her silver, and with the moment of his pleasure, Drogo calls out her name.

Synopsis

Dany looks out for the first time onto the vast, empty, flat plain of the Dothraki Sea with Ser Jorah Mormont beside her. Dany sees she has out-distanced the rest of Drogo’s khalasar, who are still climbing the ridge behind her. Among them she can see her brother Viserys struggling with his riding. The sight brings back the memory of Illyrio Mopatis offering to let Viserys stay in Pentos as his guest. Viserys had refused and insisted on coming with the khalassar to ensure that Drogo would give him the army that he promised. Dany commands Jorah and the others to wait. Jorah comments that Dany is starting to sound like a queen but Dany corrects him, calling herself a khaleesi.

As she rides out alone, Dany reflects on how the days of the journey have hardened her body. She no longer has open saddle sores nor does she suffer unbearable pain after a day’s ride. At first, during the day Drogo would ignore Dany—spending time talking, drinking, and racing with his blood riders—so Dany was left to eat meals alone or with her brother and Ser Jorah. Yet every night Drogo would come and ride her from behind. She had been miserable until she had had a dream of a dragon that engulfed her in flame and cleansed her. After that each day had been easier than the one before it and she had found pleasure in the new sights of the journey, and even started to enjoy sex with Drogo.

Once she is totally alone, Dany decides to dismount and take off her boots so she can feel the earth. Suddenly, Viserys is there, screaming and grabbing her. He is furious that she commanded him to stay on the ridge. She shoves him back and sees that he intends to hurt her, but before he can Jhogo’s whip catches him around the neck and pulls him to the ground.

Her handmaiden Irri translates for them as Jhogo asks if Dany would like to see Viserys dead or disfigured as punish for his attack. Dany declines, but tells them to take Viserys’ horse and make him walk; an emasculating punishment among the horselords. Viserys, now recovered enough to shout, orders Ser Jorah to kill the Dothraki, but the exiled knight makes the decision to turn to Dany and agree that Viserys should walk.

Daenerys is amazed that she had hit Viserys and explains to Mormont that she has woken Viserys’ dragon. Ser Jorah replies that Viserys is not the Dragon; Rhaegar was the last Dragon. When Ser Jorah asks Dany if she would want to have her brother as the king, she realizes that Viserys’ would not be a good king. Dany asks if the people of Westeros are waiting for his return and Ser Jorah tells her that the peasants only want to survive. Dany declares to Ser Jorah that Viserys will never be able to retake the Seven Kingdoms, realizing that she has known this for a long time. Viserys could not lead an army even if her husband gave him one.

Dany races her silver ahead of Ser Jorah and the others. It is dusk by the time she returns to the khalassar. Dany imagines the laughter in the khalassar when news spreads about Viserys; by the time her brother is able to return everyone in the camp will know him as a walker.

When she goes to touch her eggs they feel hot, which she attributes to the sunshine during the day. Dany remembers all of the stories about other magical creatures and wonders why there should not also be dragons.

When Drogo tries to take her from behind Dany tells him that she want to see his face and climbs on top of him. She rides Drogo as fiercely as she has ever ridden her horse and in the moment of his pleasure Drogo calls out her name.

On the far side of the Dothraki Sea, on her 14th nameday, Dany’s handmaiden Jhiqui brushes her stomach and tells her that she is pregnant.
