Jaime threw Bran Stark out the window after he unwittingly caught Jaime and his sister Cersei in flagrante at Winterfell - by Pojypojy ©

The Theon, Jory, and Robb have gone with the [[Robert BraKing to hunt boar, but Bran has to stay behind with Jon, Rickon and the girls. Jon seems to be avoiding him, and Bran thinks he is angry with him, angry with everyone, even though he's going to the Wall. Bran was excited about going to for King's Landing on a real horse, not a pony. He remembers the stories Nan had told about ghosts, dungeons where terrible things had been done and dragon heads on the wall, Bran was going to be one of the 7 Kingsguard, whose members were told in many stories. He hopes to be one of the Kingsguard someday, and is anxious to meet the greatest modern knight, Ser Barristan the Bold. He but he is apprehensive because Winterfell had been the only home he had ever known; he will miss those that he left behind, even his pony. Not being able to stand the goodbyes, he goes to the godswood with his wolf. He still has to name his wolf, everyone else having named their wolf, but he could not find one name that seemed right. He likes the name Jon gave his wolf, Ghost, but it was too late to use that name. He gets tired of trying to teach his wolf to fetch, and he decides to go climbing. His wolf doesn't want him to go, howling when he climbs away up a tree and onto the armory roof.

Bran spends much of his time climbing on the roofs of Winterfell, his mother saying he could climb before he could walk, and since he cannot remember when he first started walking, he presumes it is true. He knows things about the castle that he suspects nobody else does. His mother was terrified that he might fall and kill himself. Once he had promised his mother he would not climb, and he had kept the promise for almost fortnight, and was miserable. Finally he gave in, and confessed his crime the next day. His father ordered him to the Godswood to cleanse himself. The next morning he had disappeared, and was eventually found sleeping in the tallest tree in the grove. Eddard, angry and laughing, stated he was not his son but a squirrel, told him he could climb as long as his mother didn't catch him. Others had tried to stop him, but to no avail. Nan told a story about a boy that climbed too high and was struck down by lightning, and the crows pecking out his eyes, but Bran liked to feed the crows, and then never seemed interested in pecking out his eyes. Maester Luwin had made a clay boy and thrown it off the wall, but Bran’s response was that he was not made of clay, and never fell. The guards tried to stop him, but that was fun; none of the guards could climb as well as him.

Bran is climbing to the broken tower where he likes to feed the crows, when he is startled by voices from the First Keep, the oldest part of the castle. He doesn't recognize them as Cersei and Jaime. Cersei tells Jaime that he should be the King's Hand, that Eddard will put them in danger. Robert loves Eddard like a brother, and Jaime replies that Robert can hardly stomach his brothers. Cersie replies that Robert will listen to Eddard. Jaime states that he prefers an honorable man to ambitious men like Robert’s brothers or Littlefinger. Bran recognizes they are talking about his father. Cersei states she is worried about what Lysa may have said. Jaime is not worried about Lysa, calling her a frightened cow, and she has no proof. Cersei is worried because the king does not lover her, and that Eddard, having betrayed one king, might betray Joffrey if he takes the throne, or that Robert might put her aside. Bran is getting frightened, but wants to see who is talking and climbs over the window, then drops down. He can see the man and woman inside, naked, struggling. They are kissing, and the man is fondling her and she is moaning. Suddenly he recognizes her as the queen, and then her eyes open and she is looking directly at Bran. Bran loses his grip and falls catching himself by one hand on the window ledge, panting. Cersei and Jaime come to look at him. Jaime extends a hand for Bran to take, and yanks him up to the ledge. Jaime states “the things I do for love” and shoves Bran backwards, to fall into the courtyard. In the distance a wolf is howling.
