The Battle of Oxcross is a battle during the War of the Five Kings. The army of King Robb Stark routs and scatters the Lannister army of Ser Stafford Lannister, who is killed. This was one of the major victory for Stark forces.

Prelude

After his victories in the Battle of the Whispering Wood and Battle of the Camps, Robb Stark plans, with the aid of his great-uncle Ser Brynden "Blackfish" Tully, to take the war to the Westerlands. As the main Lannister army is in the Riverlands, the west is lightly defended. It would also force the Lannisters to make a choice of trying to defend their lands and leaving King's Landing undefended or letting the northern army plunder the west at will.

Battle

The Stark-Tully army, made up entirely of cavalry, avoide the strong castles at the border and invade the Westerlands through a previously unknown path. Meanwhile, Lord Tywin Lannister orders his cousin Ser Stafford Lannister to raise a new army. Stafford does as commanded and trains the inexperienced recruits near the village of Oxcross, within three days' ride from Lannisport. Thinking himself safe in his own lands, Stafford does not bother to set enough scouts. During the night Robb sends his vanguard, led by the Blackfish, to kill the few sentries before Robb attacked with the main army. The battle is more a rout then a real encounter, as the untrained and surprised Lannister army cannot put up much resistance.

Stafford is slain by Lord Rickard Karstark while running after his horse.[1] Ser Stevron Frey, Lord Walder Frey's eldest son and heir, suffers a minor wound during the battle, but dies shortly thereafter.[2] Among those reported dead, missing and wounded are Ser Lymond Vikary, Lord Roland Crakehall and Lord Antario Jast - these men are actually captured by the Stark forces, along with Martyn Lannister, Lord Jast's sons and half a hundred other highborn hostages.[1]

Aftermath

The remnants of the Lannister army fall back to Lannisport, where Stafford's more competent son, Ser Daven Lannister, collects them up and makes a new army. Robb Stark continues attacking the Westerlands, sacking Ashemark.[2] Galbart Glover and Rickard Karstark raid along the coast. Maege Mormont captures thousands of livestock and begins driving them back towards the Riverlands. Greatjon Umber captures the gold mines at Nunn's Deep, Castamere and in the Pendric Hills.[3]

The singer Rymund the Rhymer composes a tune commemorating the northern victory, Wolf in the Night.
