History
The youngest child of Lord Rickard Stark and Lady Lyarra Stark. Benjen attended the tourney at Harrenhal with his siblings, Brandon, Eddard, and Lyanna. At the tournament Lyanna rescued their father's vassal, Howland Reed, from an attack by some squires. Benjen offered Howland a horse and some armor so he could challenge his attackers. During the feast he teased Lyanna when she cried for a sad and beautiful song by the noted musician, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, he got wine poured over his head for it.[5][6] He also listened to a black brother, who tried to convince the gathered people to join the Night's Watch, a plea that Benjen took to heart.[2]
During Robert's Rebellion, Benjen was the Stark in Winterfell, but once his brother Eddard returned to Winterfell shortly after the end of the Rebellion, with an heir of his own, Benjen joined the Night's Watch, for reasons unknown.[7] A skilled ranger,[8] Benjen became the First Ranger for the Watch, a man considered the bane of the free folk by Mance Rayder.[9]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Benjen writes a letter to Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, updating his brother on the strength of the Night's Watch and the threat of Mance Rayder.[10] When King Robert I Baratheon visits Winterfell to offer the position of Hand of the King to Eddard, Benjen is present for a feast the Starks hold for the king. Benjen talks with Eddard's bastard son, Jon Snow, and the boy asks to be allowed to join the Night's Watch. Benjen tells Jon to wait a few years until he is certain but Jon insists.[4]
When back at the Wall Benjen is busy with his duties as First Ranger and does not have much time for Jon. He reminds Jon that the men of the Night's Watch leave their families and loyalties behind when they join the brotherhood.[11]
Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, sends Benjen with six rangers[3] to find Ser Waymar Royce, who has not returned after a ranging.[12] When there is no word from Benjen, Ser Jaremy Rykker leads two sweeps in search of him, while Qhorin Halfhand leads another search party going north from the Shadow Tower. Nothing is found except a few blazes in trees that Benjen used to mark his way. The marks stop in the stony highlands to the northwest and all trace of Benjen vanishes.[13]
The bodies of the rangers Othor and Jafer Flowers are later found, but there is no trace of Benjen.[3] His fate is one of the motivations for the great ranging of Lord Commander Mormont.
Quotes by Benjen
The Night's Watch is a sworn brotherhood. We have no families. None of us will ever father sons. Our wife is duty. Our mistress is honor.[4]
