Ser Bennis of the Brown shield
Title Ser
Allegiance House Osgrey
Book The Sworn Sword

Ser Bennis, more commonly known as Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, was a hedge knight during the reigns of Daeron II and Aerys I.

In The Sworn Sword

Together with Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, Bennis served Ser Eustace Osgrey at Standfast. Duncan remembered that Ser Bennis used to serve with Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

Ser Bennis rode with Duncan to find out why the Chequy Water dried up. They find out that villagers from the Red Widow built a dam and were diverting the water to their lands and the moat of Coldmoat. When the villagers refused to break the dam, Ser Bennis wounded one of them in the cheek.

When the knights tell their lord about the event, Ser Eustace warned them that the Red Widow will take the wounding of one of her men as a slight to her honor and will retaliate. On the advice of Ser Eustace, Ser Duncan tried to pay "the bloodprice", a compensation in money but Lady Rohanne Webber refused. She threatened that she would come for Ser Bennis with fire and steel if he did not give himself up.

Ser Eustace ordered the knights to go to his villagers and call them up for service. Ser Bennis and Duncan started to train the men but realized that they will not serve. In the end Ser Eustace, Duncan and Egg rode to the river to wait for the Lady Rohanne and her men. Bennis stayed at Standfast because the sight of him would infuriate Lady Rohanne.

While at the river the dispute is settled in a fight between Ser Duncan and Ser Lucas Longinch, the champion of Lady Rohanne, Ser Bennis stole all the valuable items in Standfast and fled.

Appearence

Ser Bennis was a big man. He seldom washed and had a red mouth from eating sourleaf.[1]
