The Bone Mountains are a colossal Essosi mountain range. [1][2] They stretch longitudinally across part of the continent of Essos, from the north coast to the south coast. The Dothraki Sea and the Red Waste lie to the western side of the Bone Mountains while the Great Sand Sea, the plains of the Jogos Nhai and Yi Ti lie to the east.

The mountains are a major natural land barrier between the Essos known to the Westerosi and the exotic, mysterious eastern side of the continent.

Three routes go through the Bone Mountains:

  • The Sand Road. – southerly route – begins from Qarth, heads far north and cuts through the Bone Mountains from the Red Waste.

The roads connect the lands with the unknown and exotic lands to the East.

The only routes past Qarth mentioned in a song of ice and fire thus far have been the shipping routes to the Jade Sea. The three aforesaid overland routes have never been mentioned.

The Bone Mountains are never mentioned by the characters of A Song of Ice and Fire and only appears in the map collection The Lands of Ice and Fire.
