A Game of Thrones
He is one of the guests at the dinner organized by the Lord Commander Jeor Mormont on the eve of Tyrion Lannister's departure.[2] He accompanies Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly, who have been assigned to stewardship, when the pronounce their vows in the weirwood circle in the Haunted Forest beyond the Wall.

He left Castle Black to face a diversion by the wildlings who lead him to the Bridge of Skulls. There, he confronted the Weeper and inflicted upon him a bloody defeat, but costing heavy losses to the Night's Watch. A Dance with Dragons
Marsh at first is helpful to the new Lord commander but becomes increasing angry with his decisions such as making the lad Satin the Lord Commanders new stewart, appointing a Wildling the new Master at Arms at Castle Black and allowing Wildlings to join the watch and diminish the food supply. The final straw for Marsh is when Snow read aloud the letter sent by Ramsay Bolton and stated his attention to march on House Bolton threatening the neutrality of the Nights Watch. Marsh and several of his followers stab Jon Snow several times. As Marsh stabs him, tears stream down his face and he says "For the Watch" before he delivers the fatal stab.
