Brandon Stark, also known as Brandon the Builder and Bran the Builder, was the legendary founder[1] of House Stark who is said to have lived during the Age of Heroes.[2]

Legend

Tales from the Reach claim that Bran the Builder was a descendant of Brandon of the Bloody Blade, a son of the mythical Garth Greenhand.[3]

According to legend, Brandon built the Wall and Winterfell;[4] some stories say he did this with the help of giants.[5] According to a ballad in Maester Childer's Winter's Kings, or the Legends and Lineages of the Starks of Winterfell, Bran also sought assistance from the children of the forest.[6]

Tales from the stormlands claim Brandon helped Durran build Storm's End when he was a boy.[7] Some stories claim King Uthor of the High Tower commissioned Bran to design the stone Hightower at Oldtown, while others state it was Bran's son, who was also named Brandon.[8] Scholars believe an ancient king's actions have been exaggerated into legend, or the reigns of multiple kings have been remembered as one through the passage of time.[9]

It is said that Bran the Builder gave the Night's Watch Brandon's Gift, a stretch of land 25 leagues wide, but some maesters argue it was another Brandon of House Stark.[10] The Kings of Winter from House Stark descended from Bran.[1]

Quotes

Names such as Brandon the Builder, Garth Greenhand, Lann the Clever, and Durran Godsgrief are names to conjure with, but it is likely that their legends hold less truth than fancy.[9]

- writings of Yandel

No one can even say for certain if Brandon the Builder ever lived. He is as remote from the time of the novels as Noah and Gilgamesh are from our own time.[11]
