The Retaking of Harrenhal occurs during the War of the Five Kings. Ser Gregor Clegane and his men retake Harrenhal after the Battle of the Ruby Ford.[1]

Prelude

Lord Roose Bolton, having decided to switch his allegiance to the Lannisters, sends a third of the northern foot to defeat at Duskendale. Roose leaves Harrenhal to its new lord, Vargo Hoat of the Brave Companions, as he goes north to the Twins for the Red Wedding with the remaining northmen. The Battle of the Ruby Ford happens while he is on his way to the wedding, as he allows Ser Gregor Clegane to overwhelm his rearguard at the ruby ford.[2]

Battle

Under orders from Lord Tywin Lannister, Gregor Clegane and the Mountain's men retake Harrenhal. Most of Vargo's garrison of Brave Companions garrison flees before he arrives, allowing Gregor to retake the castle easily. His band butchers all the inhabitants of the castle, bar the cook who opens the gate, the castle smith Ben Blackthumb, and a girl named Pia whom the Mountain and his men rape repeatedly. Gregor then butchers Vargo, known as the Goat, more literally, removing his limbs one at a time and sealing the wounds with fire to stop Vargo from bleeding to death. He then has the limbs cooked, before forcing Vargo to eat his own flesh. Gregor also has his northern captives, such as Ser Wylis Manderly, have a taste of "roast goat".[3][4]

Aftermath

Harrenhal is again in the hands of the Lannisters. Members of the Brave Companions are on the run throughout the Riverlands.
