Chett is a steward of the Night's Watch. Before he was sent to the Wall, he was a leech man's son in the Riverlands.[1]

Appearance

He had a red face with many boils and a large cyst on his neck.[2]

History

Chett was born around Hag's Mire. His father collected leeches and sold them to maesters. Chett learned the trade from his father. He was an ugly boy and so girls did not take interest in him. He picked flowers for a girl named Bessa who had a reputation of not being picky but she spurned and insulted him. Chett got so angry that he killed her. He was caught by one of Lord Walder Frey's bastards, apparently Walder Rivers, and he was sent to the Wall.

At the Wall, Chett was assigned to the Stewards. His job was to care for the ravens and old Maester Aemon with Clydas. He held the position for four years.[3] This was a rather comfortable position but it was taken away from him by Jon Snow. He advised Maester Aemon that the job was better suited for the literate Samwell Tarly.[4] After that, Chett was assigned to the kennels.[5]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Chett takes care of the dogs on the great ranging beyond the Wall. He and Lark the Sisterman come upon Jon Snow when he is talking to Gilly, one of Craster's wives.[6] Jon later heard Lark and him talking about mutiny.[7]

A Storm of Swords

During the expedition to look for first ranger Benjen Stark and Ser Waymar Royce, morale was low so Chett conspired with a dozen other brothers to desert. Among them were; Dirk, Softfoot, Ollo Lophand, Kedge Whiteye, Donnel Hill, Lark the Sisterman, Rolley of Sisterton, Clubfoot Karl, Maslyn, Small Paul and Sawwood. To make sure they would not be caught, they would have to kill some of their Night's Watch brothers:

  • Lord Commander Jeor Mormont to let command go to Ser Ottyn Wythers whom they expect to withdraw to the wall instead of going after the deserters.
  • Blane a stern officer of the Shadow Tower
  • Grubbs and Aethan; the men who had drawn watch
  • Dywen and Bannen to prevent the deserters from being tracked
  • And Samwell Tarly to prevent a raven with the message of what they had done reaching the Wall.

Chett was to kill Samwell Tarly. After the killings he would set his dogs free. The dogs would frighten the horses, whose lines had been cut and run them off. Chett had not fed the dogs for a few days so they would be extra fierce. In the confusion that would follow, the deserters could run off with the remaining horses and the food they had horded.[8]

A few hours before they would set their plan into action it began to snow. Chett realized that in fresh snow they could be easily followed and could not make speed so he canceled the plan. Instead, he decided to kill Samwell. This plan failed as well. At the moment Chett had found Samwell, a signal was blown that Others were sighted. Out of fright Chett pissed his pants.[9]

The Others attacked the Night's Watch and set them in a confused retreat to the Wall. In the retreat, Chett was killed. After his death he was turned into a wight.
