Born of dragonseed or seeds is a term to describe bastards of House Targaryen, born of the first night law.[1]

History

Origins

Though the costum had been greatly resented in the Seven Kingdoms, on Dragonstone, the first night was seen as normal. Here, the Targaryens were seen as humans closer to the gods than other men, so when a Targaryen men took his rights according to the first night law on Dragonstone, the brides in question were seen as "blessed", and they would be envied. The birth of children born of such unions were often blessed with lavish gifts. These bastards were born of dragonseed, and in time, became known as "seeds". [1]

Though the right of the first night ended when it was outlawed by King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, some Targaryens continued to carry on relationships with the daughters of innkeeps, or the wives of fishermen. Seeds and the sons of seeds thus remained plentiful on Dragonstone and surrounding areas.[1]

Dance of the Dragons

During the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon realised that his mothers fraction, the blacks, had dragons in plenty, but were in need of dragonriders. He offered lands, riches and knighthood to any such "seeds" that could master a dragon. Jacaerys' request gained the attention of more people than the dragonseeds only.[1]

Most candidates failed and were either killed or burned by the dragons. It is unconfirmed if the successful candidates truly had Targaryen blood, or, if they did, if that ancestry is what allowed them to master the dragons.[1]

Known Dragonseed

Even thought he was not able to find Grey Ghost or claim Sheepstealer, Alyn of Hull was legitimized at the same time as his brother Addam, and thus became Alyn Velaryon.[1]

Despite not being known dragonseeds, Ser Steffon Darklyn annd Lord Gormon Massey, amongst others, also tried to claim a dragon. They all failed.[1]
