Ser Gareth Long was a knight of House Long during the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen.

History

Ser Gareth served Lord Unwin Peake as the master-at-arms at Starpike. While a skilled swordsmen, he was a harsh taskmaster and sternly punished any boy who he instructed that did not meet his standards. [1]

When Lord Peake became Hand of the King, he made Ser Gareth the new master-at-arms of the Red Keep. He trained King Aegon, who developed a loathing for Ser Gareth and was a sullen student who often ignored instructions or refused to cooperate. Since Gareth couldn't harm the king, he advised Lord Peake to make Aegon's friend Gaemon Palehair, the King's whipping boy. Ser Gareth became despised in the Red Keep. He remained in King's Landing after Lord Peake resigned as King's Hand.[1]

During a plot against House Rogare in King's Landing in 135 AC, Gareth was named as being an accomplice to the plot. He never denied the charges claiming Aegon III was a weakling and unfit to sit the Iron Throne. He was condemned to death, but choose to join the Night's Watch. When a fellow conspirator, Ser Victor Risley demanded a trial by combat, Ser Gareth was chosen to face him before leaving for the Wall and promptly killed Ser Victor.[2]
