A wall mural depicting the Ghiscari lockstep legions

The Ghiscari legions,[1][2][3][4][5][6] also described as lockstep legions,[7][8] are the highly disciplined legions of Old Ghis which existed over five thousand years ago. The legions were reputed to be nearly unbeatable on the battlefield. The lockstep is a way of marching in which the marchers follow each other as closely as possible.[8]

History

In the dawn of days the city of Ghis opened its gates and poured fourth its legions across the continent of Essos. With their lockstep discipline and absolute obedience they ground entire nations beneath their boots and planted the harpy in every corner of the known world.[8]

The lockstep legions are long gone, having been defeated by the Valyrian Freehold. The legions were shattered in the fifth and final war with the Freehold. The Valyrians marched on their capital Old Ghis and the best of Ghis’s legions burned while the others broke.[8]

Present day legions

The Unsullied have been referred to as the lockstep legions come again as they are absolutely obedient, absolutely loyal, and utterly without fear.[7]

The iron legions of New Ghis are trained and armed in the same manner as the Unsullied, but the eunuchs know no other life, whereas the Ghiscari are free citizens who serve for three year terms.[9] When encamped at Meereen, the legions have fortified camps,[5] and count two thousand soldiers each.[10]

A Dance with Dragons

New Ghis allies with Yunkai against Queen Daenerys Targaryen, who has conquered the Ghiscari city Meereen and abolished slavery. Four Ghiscari legions originally join Yunkai,[1] though two more legions later join.[2] The six legions are encamped around Meereen, two of them north of Meereen, across the river Skahazadhan, and two others to the east of the city, choking off the Khyzai Pass.[3] The bloody flux, brought to Meereen by refugees from Astapor, spreads to one of the Ghiscari legions as well.[3]
