Ser Gregor Clegane is head of House Clegane and a bannerman to House Lannister. At 7'11 Gregor is a freakishly large man and weighs over thirty stone nearly all of which is muscle which causes him to possess enormous strength. For this he is often called "The Mountain That Rides" or simply "The Mountain". In battle he wears heaviest thickest plate armour in the seven Kingdoms the armour so heavy no ordinary man would be able to move let alone fight effectively, below the plate is chainmail and boilded leather. He wears a plate helm with only a narrow slit for vision atop of which his crest is a stone fist as if punching up towards the sky. Gregor carries an extremely thick oaken shield bearing the three black dogs of Clegane and wields a six foot greatsword in battle, Gregors strength allows him to wield this sword with one hand giving him enormous reach and he has been known to hack men in half with a single blow. He is well known for his size, cruelty, and prowess in battle. In the TV series he is played by Conan Stevens.[1]

History

Gregor's history is dark and filled with blood. He caused Sandor's facial scars at a young age when he held his six-year-old brother's face to a hot brazier as punishment for playing with a toy he had discarded. Their father spread the story that the injuries were caused by bedding that had caught fire.[2]

He was knighted by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.[3] There were rumors that Gregor killed his father, sisters, and his first two wives. His keep is said to be a grim place where servants vanish unaccountably and even the keep Dogs are afraid to enter the halls. Gregor has committed rapes and murders beyond count, but his most infamous deed came from his service to House Lannister during Robert's Rebellion.

Aged 17, he was one of the first Lannister soldiers to enter King's Landing during its sack at the end of the war. He and Amory Lorch scaled the Red Keep. Gregor entered the nursery of the baby infant Prince Aegon VI, son of Prince Rhaegar and killed the baby present by dashing the boy's head against a wall. Then he raped and murdered Aegons mother Princess Elia Martell, supposedly with the boy's blood and brains still on his hands.[4][5][6]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Ser Gregor took part in the Tourney of the Hand. He slew Ser Hugh of the Vale in his second joust when his lance rode up and pierced the knight's throat, according to Sandor Clegane Gregor noticed the knights gorget was not fastened properly and purposely drove his lance there.[7] He defeated Ser Balon Swann and was finally unhorsed by Ser Loras Tyrell who rode a mare in heat to the joust, which unnerved Ser Gregor's stallion. Gregor fell into a rage and killed his stallion with one blow of his sword. He then attacked the unprepared Ser Loras and would have killed him if his brother had not intercepted him. He finally came to his senses when King Robert order him to stop.[8]

After Tyrion Lannister was kidnapped by Catelyn Stark, Gregor was commanded by Tywin Lannister to raid the Riverlands to draw Eddard Stark out and be captured. Eddard Stark had earlier broken his leg, however, and instead ordered Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr to lead a party and bring Gregor to the king's justice.[9] Gregor killed Beric for the first time in the ensuing clash.[10]

A Clash of Kings

Cleganes band sacked castle Darry where Ser Gregor then killed the eight year old Lord Darry He then continued his raiding, causing enormous destruction and killing entire villages with impunity. For a time he unwittingly held Arya Stark as a captive, and she witnessed many of his atrocities first hand.[11] After the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings, Gregor commanded Tywin's left flank during the Battle of the Green Fork, leading by intimidation.[12].Gregor Cleganes band attacked the crossing at the Stone Mill which was defended by Tully forces but his force was pushed back and Clegane was forced to retreat.

A Storm of Swords

Tywin Lannister ordered Ser Gregor to take Harrenhal which was being held by Vargo "The Goat" Hoat and put the castle to the sword. A cook who had his foot cut off by Hoat opened a Postern gate for Clegane. His band butchered all the inhabitants of castle (bar the cook who opened the gate, the castle smith Ben Blackthumb and a girl named Pia who the mountain and his men raped repeatedly). Clegane also killed Hoat but took his time about it, removing Hoats limbs one at the time then had the limbs cooked (he called this "Roast Goat") before forcing Hoat to eat his own flesh. Clegane also had all his captives have a taste of "Roast Goat" also. When Tyrion Lannister demanded trial by combat to prove his innocence in the murder of Joffrey Baratheon, Gregor championed Tyrion's accuser, Cersei Lannister.[13] Elia's brother Oberyn Martell, seeing a chance to fulfill his family's long-held desire for vengeance against her murderers, championed Tyrion in opposition. Clegane fought with heavy armor and wielded a greatsword in one hand, but Oberyn outfought him with speed and a poisoned spear. After being poisoned and crippled by numerous wounds, Clegane managed to grab hold of Oberyn and crush him to death.[14]

A Feast for Crows

Despite Gregor's victory, Oberyn's poison resulted in a long, agonizing death by mortification. The venom turned the blood in Clegane body black and any leeches that touched him died instantly, his piss was full of pus and the venom also ate a hole the size of a fist in Cleganes side.Insensible and dying, he was brought to the dungeons below King's Landing by Qyburn, who was allowed to experiment on him before his purported death, According to Qyburn the poison was manticore venom but thickened with Sorcery to draw out the Mountaisn dying instead of killing instantly.[15] An enormous skull said to be Gregor's was sent to Dorne as recompense for the deaths of Elia, Aegon, and Oberyn.[16]

A Dance with Dragons

Ser Balon Swann arrives in Sunspear and presents the skull to Doran Martell, his daughter and the Sand Snakes Obara, Tyene and Nymeria Sand.

Meanwhile in King's Landing an enormous eight foot tall knight is raised to the Kingsguard to fill the vacancy left by the death of Arys Oakheart. Introduced to Cersei by Qyburn as "Ser Robert Strong". The knight is encased from head to heel in gleaming enameled white plate armor with an enclosed great helm that conceals his face upon the top of which are seven plumes each in a different color of the Faith of the Seven and golden seven pointed stars clasp the knight's white cloak to his shoulders. According to Kevan Lannister's sources, this new knight does not eat, sleep, drink, talk or even visit the privy. No one says it aloud but many in the Red Keep have guessed the identity of the Silent Giant.

Appearance

Gregor Clegane is extremely tall and strong. His height is close to eight feet. He has "massive shoulders and arms thick as the trunk of small trees."[17] In battle he carries a six-foot tall two-handed greatsword with one hand and a shield in his other.[18]
