Ser Gyles Belgrave was a knight from House Belgrave and a member of Aegon II Targaryen's Kingsguard.[1]
History
Ser Gyles commanded the escort of King Aegon II Targaryen after his meeting of the small council following the defeat of Lord Borros Baratheon of Storm's End and his army at the Battle of the Kingsroad. The king drank a cup of wine as he commanded Gyles to take his palanquin to the Red Keep's sept before closing the curtains to keep out the chill. Gyles upon arriving at the sept, informed the king who did not reply or move from behind the drapes. When Aegon did not respond for a third time, Belgrave threw back the hangings and found King Aegon II dead within with blood dribbling from his lips.[2]
When the victorious riverlords arrived at the capital, Gyles along with three of his sworn brothers of the Kingsguard were present as the king's body was laid on a bier beneath the Iron Throne.[2]
During the Hour of the Wolf, Gyles along with three other white cloaks were accused of treason after the poisoning of King Aegon II. Lord Cregan Stark of Winterfell, the Hand of the King, accused Belgrave of either poisoning the king's wine himself or failing in his duty to prevent it from happening. Gyles strongly denied he had poisoned the king. When eventually found guilty, Gyles choose death instead of taking the black, saying that while he did not poison the king he had failed in his duty to protect him nonetheless. He was personally executed by Lord Stark who took his head off with Ice. His head along with Lord Larys Strong's were put on pikes by the gates to the Red Keep.[1][1][3]
