Harrold's personal heraldry that he displays on his shield consists of the sigil of House Hardyng quartered with the sigil of House Waynwood (as he is Lady Anya's ward and first cousin once removed), as well as with the moon-and-falcon sigil of House Arryn.  Boldly, Harrold did not quarter his heraldry in the traditional way when three sigils are combined - with his direct family sigil for House Hardyng repeated in two opposite quarters, then one for Arryn and one for Waynwood.  Instead, Harrold's personal heraldry has two quarters devoted to the ''Arryn'' sigil - which would only be normally done if he was born an Arryn.  This choice is a bold proclamation of his status as Lord Robert Arrryn's closest living heir (as his first cousin once removed).  Even without seeing Harrold's heraldry, young and sickly Robert laments that Harrold is just waiting for him to die so he can become the new Lord of the Vale.

Ser Harrold Hardyng, often called Harry the Heir and sometimes the Young Falcon,[3] is a gallant, handsome squire and a ward of Lady Anya Waynwood. He is the heir presumptive of Robert Arryn.[3]

Appearance

Harry is very handsome. He has sandy brown hair, deep blue eyes and dimples when he smiles. He looks every inch a young lord-in-waiting: straight as a lance, clean-limbed, and hard with muscle. Petyr Baelish says that a wife of Harry would be the envy of every highborn maiden in the Vale, as well as a few from the riverlands and the Reach.[3]

A The Winds of Winter sample chapter describes Harrold as having sandy blond hair, pale blue eyes, and an aquiline nose.

Instead, Harrold's personal heraldry has two quarters devoted to the Arryn sigil - which would only be normally done if he was born an Arryn. This choice is a bold proclamation of his status as Lord Robert Arrryn's closest living heir (as his first cousin once removed). Even without seeing Harrold's heraldry, young and sickly Robert laments that Harrold is just waiting for him to die so he can become the new Lord of the Vale.

History

Youth

Harrold was born the eldest son of a landed knight of House Hardyng and the youngest daughter of Alys Arryn and Ser Elys Waynwood.[3] He was taken in as Lady Anya Waynwood's ward at Ironoaks and was raised there. Harrold is still young but it is rumored that, despite his youth, he has already fathered a bastard daughter.[3]

Harrold later confirms during a tournament at the Bloody Gate to join the Brotherhood of Winged Knights that he has a two year old bastard daughter named Alys that he fathered on a girl named Cissy. However, he said that childbirth left Cissy "fat as a cow" so Lady Waynwood arranged for her to be married off to one of her men-at-arms. Some time afterwards, he impregnated a girl named Saffron, the daughter of one of the richest spice merchants in Gulltown, and she is expected to give birth to his second acknowledged bastard.[4]

Robert's Heir

Jasper Arryn had two sons and a daughter. Jon became Lord and left one son, Robert. Jon's brother Ronnel died as his son Elbert was being born, and Elbert was later killed by King Aerys II Targaryen.

Jon's sister Alys had eight daughters and a son. Through an unfortunate series of unrelated events, the boy and four of the girls died young or childless, a fifth had one child who died young, a sixth became a septa, and another became a silent sister. The last, and youngest daughter died shortly after giving birth to Harrold, leaving Robert and Harrold as the last inheritable descendents of Jasper Arryn, and Harrold as Robert's heir presumptive. Should the sickly Lord Robert die without an heir, Harrold would suceed him as Lord of the Eyrie and Defender of the Vale. Since Harry is called the Young Falcon, it is presumed he would take the Arryn name.[3]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

During Petyr Baelish's meeting with the Lords Declarant, Lord Yohn Royce states Lord Robert Arryn should befriend Harry at Runestone, but he is rejected.[5]

Gossip holds that, despite his youth, Hardyng has already fathered at least one baseborn child with another on the way. He is knighted by Lord Yohn after winning a small melee for squires held at Runestone.[3]

Petyr, the Lord Protector of the Vale of Arryn, arranges a betrothal between Harrold and Sansa Stark, who is masquerading as Petyr's bastard daughter, "Alayne Stone". He schemes to reveal Sansa's true identity and reclaim Winterfell in her name.[3]

Harry rides to the Gates of the Moon before the tourney for the Brotherhood of Winged Knights. While initially rude to the bastard Alayne Stone, he later warms up to her and dances with Alayne after Lord Nestor Royce's extravagant dinner.[1]
