House Fossoway of New Barrel is a house of landed knights from the Reach, sworn to Highgarden.

They are commonly referred as the green-apple Fossoways, to differentiate them from the original branch of the house, the red apple Fossoways from Cider Hall.

The origin of this branch of house Fossoway traces back to year 208 AL, when Raymun Fossoway took different sides than his cousin Ser Steffon, the Knight of Cider Hall, on a trial by combat. Ramun Fossoway, who was knighted minutes before the battle by Ser Lyonel Baratheon, fought for his friend Duncan the Tall. To differentiate himself from his cousin fighting for the other side, he painted the apple from his shield in green, playing at Ser Steffons often-repeated jape that he was "still green". He stated that he preferred to be green that rotten.

It is unknown how the green house branch prospered after the Tourney at Ashford, but approximately a century afterwards its strength was comparable to the main branch.

The location of New Barrel is unknown, although it is possible that thelands of the green apples are adjacent to the lands of the red ones.

Their banner is a green apple over a golden field. Their motto does not appear on the books.

The Fossoways from Cider Hall at the end of the third century

The known Fossoways from the red apple branch during the timespan of the events described on A Song of Ice and Fire are:

  • Ser Jon Fossoway: The Knight of New Barrel. A genial man.
    • Janna Tyrell: His wife. Lord Mace Tyrell's sister.

With unspecified familiar relationship to the main branch of the house there is:

  • Lady leonette Fossoway: Wife of Ser Gunthor Hightower, Lord Leyton's third son.

There is also Leonette Fossoway, married to Garlan Tyrell (second son of Lord Mace Tyrell), who could be either from the red or the green apple branches of the house.
