House Payne is a noble house from the Westerlands. It is one of the principal houses sworn to House Lannister.[1] Their arms are purple and white chequy with gold coins in the checks.[2][3]

History

Tyrion Lannister remarks that there is a story behind the coins on the arms of House Payne, however the events of this story are currently unknown.[2]

Ser Ilyn Payne was captain of guards for Lord Tywin Lannister when he was Hand of the King for Aerys II Targaryen. Ilyn had his tongue torn out by Aerys for comments on who truly ruled the Seven Kingdoms.[4][5]

After Robert's Rebellion, Ilyn was named the King's Justice as a deference by King Robert I Baratheon to Tywin.

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Ser Ilyn Payne comes north to meet King Robert Baratheon on his ride south after naming Lord Eddard Stark as his new Hand of the King. Ilyn rides with Lord Renly Baratheon and Ser Barristan Selmy. At Darry, Queen Cersei Lannister asks Ilyn to kill Lady, Sansa Stark's direwolf, but Eddard does the deed himself, saying that the creature deserves better than a butcher.

When Eddard needs a commander for the men sent to kill Ser Gregor Clegane, Ilyn Payne is one of the candidates put forth. In the end he chooses Lord Beric Dondarrion.

Podrick Payne is from a lesser branch of House Payne. He squires for Ser Cedric Payne, who dies in the Riverlands campaign during the War of the Five Kings. He then squires for Ser Lorimer, who is hanged for stealing a ham.[6] He is then made Tyrion Lannister's squire when Tyrion joins Lord Tywin Lannister's army before the Battle of the Green Fork.[7]

Ilyn executes Eddard with his own blade, Ice, on the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor after being ordered by King Joffrey Baratheon.

A Clash of Kings

During the Battle of the Blackwater, Ser Ilyn is stationed near Cersei so if Stannis Baratheon were to win, she would have Ilyn behead her to prevent her from falling into Stannis's hands. Podrick accompanies Tyrion in his sorties outside the walls of King's Landing. In the last jaunt, he saves Tyrion from Ser Mandon Moore of the Kingsguard.

A Storm of Swords

Podrick is among Tyrion's group of gathered nobility that welcomes the Dornish party, headed by Prince Oberyn Martell, to King's Landing.

Ilyn relinquishes Eddard's sword Ice to Tywin, and in return receives a new blade.[8]

A Feast for Crows

Ilyn accompanies Ser Jaime Lannister north to take Riverrun. During the ride he and Jaime practice swordfighting.

Podrick follows Brienne of Tarth from King's Landing to Maidenpool. Brienne seeks Sansa Stark, who in turn might know the whereabouts of her husband Tyrion, a fugitive after the death of his father, Tywin. Podrick is with Brienne during her encounters with remnants of the Brave Companions at the Whispers and the crossroads inn. When they are captured by the brotherhood without banners led by Lady Stoneheart, Podrick is judged guilty of association with the Lannisters and is sentenced to hang.
