House Tyrell of Highgarden is one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms, being Lords Paramount of the Mander and the liege lords of the Reach. A large, wealthy house, its wealth is only surpassed among the Great Houses by House Lannister, and the Tyrells can field the greatest armies. Additionally, if they call the ships of the Redwyne fleet, the lords of the Shield Islands, and the coastal lords, they can command a navy that equals if not surpasses the royal fleet of King's Landing.
Highgarden is an ancient seat of rule and the heart of chivalry in the Seven Kingdoms;[1] the Tyrells style themselves 'Defenders of the Marches' and 'High Marshals of the Reach', and traditionally, they have been Wardens of the South in addition to Lords Paramount of the Mander. Their sigil is a golden rose on a green field, and their words are "Growing Strong."[2] Members of the family tend to have curly brown hair and brown or golden eyes.

History
Kingdom of the Reach
Unlike the other Great Houses, the Tyrells never ruled the Reach as kings. Instead, they trace their line of descent through the female line to the legendary Garth the Gardener, the mythical first King of the Reach reigning in the Age of Heroes, and the son of the equally mythic Garth Greenhand.[3] Members of House Gardener, the ruling house of the Kingdom of the Reach, periodically intermarried with lower ranking houses of the Reach such as House Tyrell.[4]
The Tyrells served as stewards to House Gardener.[5] Ser Alester Tyrell, the founder of the house, was an Andal knight and adventurer who showed such prowess at arms that he was named the champion and sword shield of King Gwayne V Gardener, the last of the Three Sage Kings.[5][4] Ser Alester's eldest son also became a notable knight, but died in a tourney. Alester's second son, Gareth, was of a more bookish bent and never achieved knighthood, choosing instead to serve as a royal steward. He and his son Leo performed their duties so well, the Gardeners made the office of High Steward hereditary. It is from Gareth that today’s Tyrells descend.[4]
During the minority of King Garland VI Gardener, a member of House Tyrell ruled the Reach in his name as Regent.[4]
When Lords Manderly and Peake instigated a civil war to see their respective wives, both daughters to the senile old King Garth X Gardener, succeed as Queen of the Reach, Ser Osmund Tyrell, the High Steward of Highgarden, led an alliance of twoscore houses to put down the rebels and reclaimed the ruins of Highgarden which had been sacked by a Dornish king and his raiders. Ser Osmund placed a second cousin of the late Garth X, who has been killed by the raiders, upon the new throne as King Mern VI Gardener.[5]
Relying on the able counsel of Ser Osmund, and later Osmund's son Ser Robert Tyrell, and finally Robert's son Lorent Tyrell, King Mern ruled well, rebuilding Highgarden and doing much and more to restore the power of the Reach and House Gardener.[5] Mern VI was so pleased with them that he gave Ser Robert the hand of his youngest daughter in marriage, thereby allowing the following generations of Tyrells to claim decent from Garth Greenhand.[4] That was the first marriage between the two houses, and nine more unions followed in the passing centuries.[4]
Targaryen Era
Following the defeat and death of King Mern IX Gardener and his other kin, at the Field of Fire during the War of Conquest, Harlen Tyrell, hereditary high steward of the Reach, surrendered Highgarden and was granted the castle along with dominion of the Reach as Lord Paramount of the Mander by Aegon the Conqueror. As Wardens of the South they frequently warred with the Dornishmen, who remained independent. Harlen disappeared in the Dornish sands during the First Dornish War.[6]
During the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, the Tyrells hosted the famed Tourney of the Field of Roses.[7]
As the Dance of the Dragons began, Lord Lyonel Tyrell was an infant, and his regent mother was judged likely to align the Reach with the House's "overmighty" bannermen, the Hightowers, and the greens.[8] However, House Tyrell decided to take no part in the war.[9][4] The Tyrell bannermen, on the other hand, were split during the war, with men of the Reach fighting on both sides. Later Ser Ulf the White would attempt to claim Highgarden for himself, as House Tyrell had taken no part in the Dance and he believed they should be considered traitors.[8]
When Daeron I Targaryen, the Young Dragon, attempted the conquest of Dorne, Lord Lyonel commanded the army that invaded via Prince's Pass. After the initial victory, Daeron appointed Lord Tyrell as governor of Dorne. Lord Tyrell liked Dornish women and one night he pulled the rope that would signal for a wench to come to his bed, and a hundred scorpions fell from the canopy instead. His death sparked new revolts, and the conquest was undone in a fortnight.[4][10]
Lord Leo "Longthorn" Tyrell participated in the tourney at Ashford Meadow, beginning the tourney as one of the champions. Both Prince Aegon Targaryen and Ser Duncan recognized him as a formidable opponent, one that Duncan would better avoid.[11]
During Robert's Rebellion, House Tyrell stayed loyal to King Aerys II Targaryen. Lord Mace Tyrell's forces achieved victory against Robert Baratheon at the Battle of Ashford, dealing the future king his only defeat of the war at the cost of Ser Quentin Tyrell's life. Mace likes to take credit for the success, but it was the van under command of Lord Randyll Tarly that put Robert to flight. Mace went on to besiege Robert's brother Stannis at Storm's End, but bent the knee after the Targaryens were all but wiped out in the Sack of King's Landing. Robert Baratheon, king by conquest, forgave them and accepted them as sworn vassals.
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
House Tyrell is among the houses that Viserys Targaryen believes will rise for him if he lands in Westeros.
Ser Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers, rides in the Hand's tourney, defeating Ser Gregor Clegane but yielding the final tilt to Sandor Clegane after the Hound rescues him from the Mountain. He is upset when the Hand of the King, Eddard Stark, does not send him to bring Gregor to justice for pillaging the riverlands. As King Robert Baratheon lays dying, Loras supports Renly Baratheon's desire to take the crown before either Prince Joffrey Baratheon or Lord Stannis Baratheon can claim it, and flees the city with him when Lord Stark rebuffs Renly's request for his aid. Lord Mace Tyrell and his brothers (of which he has none), uncles, and sons (and Ser Loras specifically) are named among the nobles whom the new King Joffrey decrees must swear fealty to him or be attainted as traitors.
A Clash of Kings
House Tyrell declares for King Renly. Margaery Tyrell is to be his queen, his ex-squire and secret lover Ser Loras the Lord Commander of his Rainbow Guard, and Lord Mace Tyrell his Hand. With the backing of the Tyrells and almost all of their bannermen, Renly has the strongest army in the War of the Five Kings. After a failed parley with his brother Stannis, Renly's host seems sure to win the coming battle. When he is murdered that night, an enraged Loras kills the two knights who were guarding him.
Renly's assassination sees many of the Reach's soldiers defect to Stannis's cause. The Tyrells and their leal bannermen (including Paxter Redwyne, Randyll Tarly and Mathis Rowan) plot their next move at Bitterbridge, where they receive a visit from Petyr Baelish. He extends an offer of alliance with Houses Baratheon and Lannister. The Tyrells join with Tywin Lannister, marching on King's Landing in time to save the city and King Joffrey and rout Stannis's forces in the Battle of the Blackwater. Mace's second son, Ser Garlan the Gallant, fights in Renly's armor, frightening the smallfolk into believing the king had risen from the grave.
After the battle, Mace is rewarded with the small council post of master of ships, while Lords Redwyne and Rowan are given advisory seats. Garlan is made Lord of Brightwater Keep, since the Florents now serve Stannis's cause. Loras joins the Kingsguard, and Margaery is betrothed to King Joffrey.
A Storm of Swords
Prior to Margaery's arrival in King's Landing, Tyrell men with food carts succor the starving residents, creating wild popularity for her and her house despite the fact that it was the Tyrell embargo that created the shortage in the first place.
A Tyrell man-at-arms is killed and two Gargalen man-at-arms are scalded in a fight in Flea Bottom.
Mace's mother, Lady Olenna Redwyne, arranges to meet with Sansa Stark. Talking to Sansa about Joffrey, Olenna decides she does not care for the match between he and Margaery and conspires with Petyr Baelish to poison Joffrey at his own wedding feast. Tyrion Lannister is falsely accused of the murder, and Mace is one of the judges at his trial. He wants the Imp dead because Margaery was drinking from the same cup, unaware that it was his mother who perpetrated the poisoning, but Tyrion eventually escapes the city.
A Feast for Crows
The Tyrells come to dominate their tenuous alliance with the Lannisters despite the paranoid meddling of Queen Cersei Lannister. After the death of Lord Tywin Lannister, her father and the Hand of the King, Cersei resumes her regency and removes Mace and his favored bannermen from the small council. Meanwhile, Margaery is wed to the new king, Joffrey's brother Tommen, releasing Mace from his vow not to leave the city until Margaery is wed. Margaery makes a point to win the love of the people and to try and prepare Tommen for kingship; she is baffled by Cersei's refusal of all her suggestions and apparent lack of understanding regarding dire military threats. She resists the attempted seductions of Cersei's agent, Osney Kettleblack.
Cersei sends Loras to besiege Dragonstone and Mace to besiege Storm's End to remove them from the capital and place them in danger. Loras is badly wounded while seizing the island, and Mace quickly returns when he hears that Margaery has been imprisoned by the High Sparrow, she and Cersei exchanging mutual accusations of immorality. By the time he arrives, however, he finds Randyll Tarly has already secured her release; Lord Tarly is to hold them until their trial. Mace again vows to remain in the city, this time until Margaery is acquitted in her upcoming trial.
A Dance with Dragons
With Cersei imprisoned, Ser Kevan Lannister is named Lord Regent over Tommen, and he takes several steps to smooth over Cersei's actions. Mace Tyrell is finally made Hand, and his bannermen Randyll Tarly and Paxter Redwyne are made masters of laws and ships, respectively. Lord Mace has a hundred Highgarden men added to the City Watch of King's Landing, further consolidating power in the capital. However, Ser Kevan is killed by Varys, which the Spider hopes will lead to continued fracturing of the Lannister-Tyrell alliance.
