House Westerling of the Crag is a noble house from the Crag in the northwestern Westerlands. They are sworn to House Lannister, and are considered among their principal bannermen.[1] Their sigil is six white shells on a sand-colored field.[2][3]

According to semi-canon sources, their words are "Honor, not Honors".[4]

History

The Westerlings are an ancient line, and proud house, that are descended from the First Men. They once intermarried with the Kings of the Rock, and a Jeyne Westerling married King Maegor I of House Targaryen. The Crag is located on the western coast and was once well-regarded.

So well regarded that Ser Harrold Westerling was asked to join the Kingsguard under Viserys I and rose to the position of Lord Commander.[5] Many decades later Ser Ormond Westerling participated in the Ashford Tourney. Their arms were spotted by Dunk among the gathered heraldry.[6]

In more recent times, during Robert's Rebellion, Ser Elys Westerling participated in the Sack of King's Landing.[7] The Westerling’s fortunes have faltered over the years, with lands and mines being sold until the Westerlings were reduced to little wealth and influence. They now scarcely have the funds to maintain their keep, which is more ruin than stronghold, and are regarded as having more pride than power.[2]

Lord Gawen Westerling offered his daughter Jeyne as a possible match for Willem or Martyn Lannister, but he was turned down by Kevan Lannister, most likely because of her low standing, seeing as her maternal great-grandfather was a mere trader in saffron and pepper.

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Lord Gawen Westerling is captured at the Battle of the Whispering Wood. He is held at Seagard during his imprisonment.

A Clash of Kings

Around the time of the Battle of the Fords, King Robb Stark and his forces in the Westerlands march on the Crag.

A Storm of Swords

Jeyne Westerling comforts Robb after he took an arrow wound storming the Crag. To save her from dishonor, Robb marries Jeyne afterwards. Rollam Westerling becomes Robb's squire and Ser Raynald Westerling joins his retinue. When House Westerling joins House Stark in the War of the Five Kings, they bring fifty men, of whom only twelve are knights.

Robb's marriage with Jeyne breaks his alliance with House Frey, as he had promised to marry a daughter of Lord Walder Frey. Jeyne remains at Riverrun when Robb goes to the Twins for the wedding of Lord Edmure Tully to Roslin Frey, but Robb is murdered in the Red Wedding. The wounded Raynald was last seen jumping into the Green Fork and is presumed dead.

Lord Gawen, his wife Sybell Spicer, and Jeyne are welcomed back into the king's peace after the Red Wedding.[8]

A Feast for Crows

Ser Jaime Lannister ends the Siege of Riverrun, and Sybell and her surviving children are to return to Lord Gawen in the Westerlands.[9]
