Appearance
Ser Jared is a tall, stooped man of fifty years.[2] He is lean, balding and pockmarked.[3] He is long and lean of limb and clean-shaved, but for a thin grey mustache.[4]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Jared attends the Tourney of the Hand at King's Landing with five of his brothers,[5] but is too old to ride in the lists. He attends Lord Walder at the parley with Lady Catelyn Tully. Jared is one of the Freys placed under Robb Stark's command after the parley ends.[2]
A Clash of Kings
Jared is a member of the Frey contingent that is part of Lord Roose Bolton's army at Harrenhal. He was once a captive of House Lannister.[1]
A Dance with Dragons
Along with Rhaegar Frey and Symond Frey, Jared travels to White Harbor to return the bones of Wendel Manderly, killed at the Red Wedding, to his father, Wyman Manderly. The Freys also want to ensure White Harbor bends the knee to the Iron Throne. They offer Wyman a Frey bride and betrothals of Rhaegar Frey to his granddaughter Wynafryd and Little Walder Frey to Wyman's other granddaughter, Wylla.
When Davos Seaworth arrives in White Harbor to try and persuade House Manderly to support Stannis Baratheon, the three Freys are already present. While Wendel was actually murdered by the Freys, Jared claims the Red Wedding was Robb Stark's doing and that Wendel died defending Lord Walder Frey from Robb Stark, who had changed into a rabid wolf. A shocked Davos calls Jared a liar. Jared draws his sword and is close to attacking Davos, but Wyman Manderly says he will have no bloodshed in Merman's Court.[4] Wyman is greatly angered, but pretends to agree with the Freys, as the Iron Throne holds hostage his surviving son and heir, Wylis Manderly. Wyman fakes Davos's death by having a criminal with similar features executed and his head dipped in tar so the Freys falsely believe him to be Davos. As a reward for proving his loyalty, Queen Cersei Lannister has Wylis Manderly returned to White Harbor.
According to Wyman Manderly, Rhaegar, Jared and Symond were given palfreys as "guest gifts" when the three Freys departed White Harbor.[6] Wyman claims they were all to meet at Winterfell for the wedding of "Arya Stark" to Ramsay Bolton. They have not been seen since, although Aenys Frey and Hosteen Frey, who were present at Winterfell, suspect Wyman Manderly of foul play.
Wyman Manderly presents three huge pies at the wedding feast while requesting a song from the singer Abel about the Rat Cook, implying the three Freys were actually present at the wedding after all.
