Not to be confused with a previous Jeyne Westerling, who lived about 300 years ago and married King Maegor I.

Jeyne Westerling is the eldest daughter of Lord Gawen Westerling and Sybell Spicer. In the TV series her character is replaced by a character called Talisa Maegyr of Volantis played by Oona Chaplin.

Jeyne is a shy, pretty girl, though according to Jaime Lannister not a beauty to lose a kingdom for.[3][4] She is slender of posture. Jeyne has chestnut curls, a heart-shaped face, and brown eyes.[3]

History

House Westerling is an old house that descends from the First Men.[3] Although noble and old the family is not rich, their gold mines having failed. Presumably to better his finances Gawen Westerling wed Sybell Spicer, the daughter of an ennobled family that descended from merchants. Because of the low standing of Jeyne's mother, she was rejected as a match for one of Kevan Lannister's sons.[5]

A Storm of Swords

During King Robb Stark's expedition in the Westerlands his army storms the Crag, the ancestral keep of the Westerlings. Robb is wounded by an arrow and is nursed by Jeyne. While still at the Crag, Robb receives a message that his younger brothers, Bran and Rickon, have been killed by his former friend, Theon Greyjoy. Jeyne comforts Robb in his grief and they sleep together. To protect her honour he marries her the next day.[3] The marriage lead directly to the break-up of her husband’s alliance with House Frey, as Robb had sworn to wed a daughter of Lord Walder Frey. The outraged Freys take their forces back to the Twins, although a part of their strength remains with Lord Roose Bolton.[3]

The couple are devoted to each other and try to conceive. Jeyne tries hard to be a good wife for Robb, although she is worried about the pressure he is under as King in the North. On Catelyn Tully's advice she tries to be patient and understanding.[6] Robb for his part is able to smile and be temporarily without worries when he is in her company.[7]

After negotiations, House Frey offers to ally themselves once again to the Starks in return for the marriage of Edmure Tully to Roslin Frey and a personal apology from Robb.[7] Jeyne remains at Riverrun to avoid extra tension between Lord Frey and her husband.[8]

At the wedding, Houses Frey and Bolton betray and kill Robb. After the wedding, Jeyne is pardoned by the Iron Throne.[9]

A Feast for Crows

Jeyne goes into mourning, to the chagrin of her mother, Sybell Spicer, who had been in secret negotiations with Lord Tywin Lannister. Unknown to Jeyne, her mother had given her potions against pregnancy under the pretense of a fertility potion. Riverrun is besieged shortly after, but the siege is settled peacefully by Ser Jaime Lannister. He tasks Forley Prester with returning Jeyne to her father, Gawen Westerling, back at the Crag. To avoid tales that her dead husband Robb had given her a child and thus an heir to the North, Jeyne is to remain unmarried for two years and is given a strong escort of soldiers with secret instructions to kill her if there would be any attempt at escape during the travel from Riverrun to the Crag. Before she leaves, Jaime notices that Jeyne has ripped her finely-made clothes in an act of mourning for Robb and rebellion at her mother.[4]

Family

Jeyne has two brothers, Raynald and Rollan, and a sister, Eleyna. Her elder brother Raynald was present at the Red Wedding, at which he freed Grey Wind and tried to escape the Freys by jumping in the river. However, he is presumed dead.[10] Her younger brother Rollam served as Robb's squire.[3] Jeyne and her younger sister Eleyna are both to marry lords or heirs, as negotiated between their mother and Tywin Lannister.[4]

Speculations

It has been noted by fans that the descriptions of Jeyne as given by Jaime Lannister and Catelyn Tully do not match. In A Storm of Swords Catelyn describes her as an undeniable pretty young woman, slender but with good hips, a factor which may suggest a fertile woman.[3] However, in A Feast For Crows Jaime describes her as a pretty girl, but not a girl to lose a kingdom for. He also notes that she has narrow hips.[4] This difference has been the source for a number of speculations about Jeyne's fate.[11] [12][13][14]
